On This Day | February 23, 1945

During the Battle of Iwo Jima, U.S. Marines raised two American flags over Mount Suribachi. The first flag marked the successful capture of the island’s highest point, a critical moment in one of the fiercest battles of World War II. Later that day, it was replaced with a larger flag so it could be seen across the battlefield.

The second flag raising was captured by photographer Joe Rosenthal, creating one of the most recognizable images in American and Marine Corps history. The photograph came to symbolize the perseverance, sacrifice, and enduring values of Marines fighting in the Pacific.

Today, visitors to the World War II Gallery at the National Museum of the Marine Corps can view both historic Iwo Jima flags—the smaller flag raised first and the larger flag immortalized in Rosenthal’s photograph. Preserved together, they stand as powerful reminders of the Marines who fought on Iwo Jima and the legacy that continues to inspire future generations.
