You don’t have to choose.

You do not owe any political party your loyalty at the expense of your principles.

If you believe in local control, you don’t have to abandon that because your party tells you to.

If you believe in election integrity, you deserve leaders who will listen to your concerns, answer your questions and take them seriously.

If you believe political power belongs to the people…and our constitution says so…you should be willing to defend our constitutional right to direct democracy whether you agree with the issue on a petition or not.

If you believe in states’ rights, you should defend Arkansas’ authority over our elections regardless of who is sitting in the White House.

If you believe in transparency and accountable government, that belief shouldn’t change depending on which party holds the power. Sunlight has a way of cleaning things up — government works better when the people can see what it’s doing.

Traveling this state (and I’ve seen a lot of it), one thing has stood out to me everywhere I go: Arkansans are fiercely independent…fiercely. We think for ourselves. We ask questions. We don’t particularly like being told what to think, who to trust, or how we’re supposed to vote. That independence may be one of the most “Arkansas” things about us.

None of those principles belong to a political party.

And principles aren’t principles if we only apply them when it’s politically convenient.

The Arkansas Constitution says it plainly: “All political power is inherent in the people.”

Not in a party. Not in an elected official or a candidate. In the people.

There is more at stake than party.

You can be a Republican and vote for a Democrat. You can be a Democrat and vote for a Republican. You can choose to vote for a third party. You can be independent and refuse to choose a team at all.

You don’t have to change who you are. You don’t have to explain yourself. And you don’t need anyone’s permission.

Look at the candidates. Ask what they believe. Ask what they’ll protect. Ask who they’ll answer to when their party and the people are pulling them in different directions. Ask hard questions. Decide who you trust to protect the things that matter to you.

Then vote accordingly.

One things for sure - I know my answer.

I choose the people of Arkansas. Every time. Every. Single. Time.

And if you’d like to talk, my phone number is (501)690-8227.

(I do work full time so if you call during the day, I’ll call you back after work. And yes, against all odds, I believe a working person should be able to get elected to a statewide office. I’m set out to prove it.)

Day 6 of getting to know the candidate. This is Courtney King, a NWA resident of over two decades - an artist and therapist, she is running to represent you in the State House and break the Republican supermajority. She believes YOUR tax dollars should work for you: funding public schools not private, protecting Arkansas farmers, and making life more affordable. This November, no kings besides Courtney King.
