Springdale Police Department’s K9 Tillman to get donation of body armor

Springdale Police Department, AR - K9 Tillman will receive a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 Tillman’s vest was sponsored by the Virginia L. Stoner Huguenard Endowment Fund of Corunna, IN and will be embroidered with the sentiment “In memory of Virginia L. Stoner Huguenard”. Delivery is expected within ten weeks.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., established in 2009, is a 501(c)(3) charity whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. This potentially lifesaving body armor for four-legged K9 officers is U.S. made, custom fitted, and National Institute of Justice (NIJ) certified. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided over 6,631 vests valued at $6.9 million to K9s in all 50 states, made possible by both private and corporate donations.

The program is open to U.S. dogs at least 20 months old, actively employed, and certified with law enforcement or related agencies. K9s with expired vests are also eligible to participate. There are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the United States.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. accepts tax-deductible contributions in any amount, while a single donation of $1,050 will sponsor one vest. Each vest has a value of $1800.00, weighs an average of 4-5 lbs., and comes with a five-year warranty. For more information, or to learn about volunteer opportunities, please call (508) 824-6978. Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. provides information, lists events, and accepts donations at www.vik9s.org, or you may mail your contribution to P.O. Box 9, East Taunton, MA 02718.

Corporal Hammons wants to extend his thanks to Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. and the Virginia L. Stoner Huguenard Endowment Fund for providing Tillman with this protective vest. "Tillman is not only my partner, but an important part of our department and the community we serve. Knowing he will have this added protection while doing his job provides me with additional peace of mind. We truly appreciate their generosity and commitment to protecting law enforcement K9s like Tillman."

As the week leading into the Labor Day holiday begins, plans for get-togethers, destinations, and festivities are coming together. Make sure one of the first plans you make is who will be the designated driver.

If alcohol is part of your celebration, plan ahead for a safe ride home. Designate a sober driver, use a rideshare service, or make other arrangements before the festivities begin.

Our Officers will be on the lookout for impaired drivers. Help us keep Springdale’s roads safe for everyone.

Don’t trade your fun for flashing lights. Drive sober.

🎒 BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY 🚌

As school begins and students fill the classrooms, we want to make sure everyone gets to and from school safely.

As you travel through our school zones, remember:

🚌 STOP FOR SCHOOL BUSES
Stop for school buses displaying their stop signal, whether you are approaching from the opposite direction, crossing their path, or traveling behind them. Give students plenty of room to safely enter and exit the bus.

🚸 WATCH FOR CROSSWALKS
Stop for pedestrians in crosswalks and wait until they have safely crossed before proceeding.

⚠️ SLOW DOWN
The speed limit in school zones is 20 MPH while students are present. Slow down and stay alert.

📵 PUT THE PHONE DOWN
Cellphone use is prohibited in school zones except in an emergency. Keep your eyes on the road and your attention on what’s happening around you.

⏰ PLAN AHEAD
Expect delays around schools during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. Give yourself extra time and be patient with other drivers.

A few extra minutes and a little extra attention can make all the difference in keeping our students safe.

Have a safe and great school year, Springdale!
