Welcome to the brand new Spring Lake Stormwater Department page. Here I will give hints to help keep the stormwater system healthy and working correctly, as well as take messages with questions, comments, and suggestions from Spring Lake residents. My name is Deanna Rosario and I am your stormwater administrator, and entire stormwater department staff. I, with a lot of help from the water guys and

street guys, am responsible for 148 outfalls, nearly 1500 drains, many miles of piping, and about 5 miles of the Little River. If we can each do a little bit, especially by simply cleaning gutters and drains on your part of the street, we can all do a tremendous amount. Please keep your comments clean and appropriate for children to read.

Notice of trapping activity this week or next week on the creek behind Kristen Ave

We have discovered several beaver dams in the creek behind Kristen Avenue this week.

There will be visits from the USDA biologist over several days as he traps the beavers and destroys the dams. He drives a gray Fort Bragg F150 truck so if you see it parked in front of your house, that’s why.

We must trap the animals because their dams cause damage to the banks, saturate the lawns, and destabilizes the foundations of the homes as the water rises. There are already several homes where the water is covering part of the backyard.

It also seriously impacts the stormwater system which can cause flooding on the streets in even small storms.

If you have any questions, please call me at 910-985-1804 or email me at [email protected]

Today is going to be seriously nasty, rain and wind wise. Don't drive through flooded areas, don't drive on people's yards, if signs are up, don't go around them. Watch for downed trees and powerlines and please don't crowd the staff out there working hard to restore services or clear roadways.

I have been checking pressures in Old Holly Hills and the pressure readings are actually falling within this range. I am continuing to monitor it and record results. I should have a better idea of the levels after lunch. Stay tuned!

Last evening, after a nearly 8 hr shift, on a Friday of course, I got a call about a leaking hydrant. What we found was a hydrant that had been hit so hard it not only snapped the stem, it snapped the pipe it was attached to. After turning off nine valves to isolate the leak because of looping systems, our partners, RLT, were able to dig it out of what had essentially become quicksand. They were able to fix the pipe and the hydrant, insert a valve in the pipe to the hydrant, and we were finally able to carefully turn valves on to restore water by 4:00AM.

Y’all, I got to work at 8:00AM on Friday 2/27. I worked 20 hours with my crew and our utility partners to fix something that someone hit then ran from. I got home just after 4:30AM Saturday 2/28.

That driver not only damaged public property, they cost residents hours of water availability, funds to fix it, and a large increase in our next PWC bill. Money that could have gone towards restocking our repair supplies, replacing service lines, or contracting out a major project in our older sections.

Now this is done, done right, and done for years to come. Even if someone hits it again.

By the way, if anyone has any information about this hydrant being hit, please let the Spring Lake Police Department know. Thank you
