Memorial Day 2026 - Members of Spring City ALA Unit #203 attended the Memorial Day service at the historic Rhea County Courthouse this morning. The Rhea County High School Band and the Rhea County High School JROTC provided patriotic music, posted the colors, and led the Pledge of Allegiance. The National Anthem was presented by Lekesha Miles. The keynote speaker was Major Scott Heath who gave a very interesting presentation. McClendon/Garrison American Legion Post 203 members were also in attendance. Unit #203 President Jane Reed, and Post #203 Commander, Bernadette Avelar, presented the memorial wreaths. TAPS is always very emotional, and today was no exception. Please remember as you celebrate Memorial Day, the true reason for the holiday - to honor and mourn military personnel who died while serving in the Armed Forces.

Memorial Day is more than a long weekend — it is a time to come together as a community and honor the brave men and women who gave everything for our freedom. Attending a memorial service reminds us that the liberties we enjoy today came at a great cost, and it ensures the sacrifices of our fallen heroes are never forgotten.

Spring City American Legion Auxiliary Unit 203 usually distributes poppies on "National Poppy Day" - the Friday before Memorial Day every year. However, because of the weather expected for the next couple of day, that is not happening this year. We will definitely distribute poppies on another day. In the meantime, if you have a poppy, remember to wear it - especially for Memorial Day!

National Poppy Day
Poppy Day is celebrated in countries around the world. The American Legion Family brought National Poppy Day to the United States by asking Congress to designate the Friday before Memorial Day, as National Poppy Day.

On the Friday before Memorial Day, wear a red poppy to honor the fallen and support the living who have worn our nation's uniform.

The red poppy is a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since World War I to honor those who served and died for our country in all wars. It reminds Americans of the sacrifices made by our veterans while protecting our freedoms.

Led by the American Legion Auxiliary, each year members of The American Legion Family distribute poppies with a request that the person receiving the flower make a donation to support the future of veterans, active-duty military personnel and their families with medical and financial needs.

Spring City American Legion Auxiliary Unit #203 wants to thank some of our sponsors for the breakfast the Unit hosted on May 2, 2026: Spring City Piggly Wiggly, Lee Ann's Market, Swafford's Produce (I hope I'm not forgetting anyone). In case you haven't heard, the Unit's President, Jane Reed, was taken to the hospital Friday, May 1st while we were preparing for the breakfast. She wasn't able to be with us on May 2nd and she is still in Rhea Medical Center. Hopefully, she will be home soon. Anyway, she is the driving force behind our Unit and the one who talks to all those fine businesses that support our endeavors.

The Unit also wants to thank all those who came by to eat with us, or, if you didn't eat, to donate to our cause of supporting veterans in any ways that we are able. We hope you had a good breakfast and a good visit with us.

Last, but certainly not least, many thanks to all the members who put in many hours preparing and serving the food. Everyone was tired when the doors closed but it was a good day.

If you would like to join the Unit, or the Post, reach out to one of the members or send us a message and we'll reach back to you! Our mission is to serve and support our veterans and we try to have a good time while doing just that.

Today is Four Chaplains Day! Please spend a moment in silence in their honor. Thank you!

The U.S. Army Transport Dorchester was hit by a German U-boat torpedo on Feb. 3, 1943, as it was transporting troops in the North Atlantic to an American base in Greenland. The ship sank, killing 672 of the 902 officers and enlisted men, merchant seamen and civilian workers aboard. But for those who survived, they were left with the memory of the courage and leadership exhibited by four chaplains of different faiths, who, in sacrificing their lives, created a unique legacy of brotherhood.

As soldiers rushed to lifeboats, Rev. George Fox (Methodist), Jewish Rabbi Alexander Goode, Rev. Clark Poling (Dutch Reformed) and Father John Washington (Roman Catholic) comforted the wounded and directed others to safety. One survivor watched the chaplains distribute life jackets, and when they ran out, they removed theirs and gave them to four young men. As the Dorchester sank, the chaplains were seen linked arm in arm, praying.
