Spotsylvania County Clerk of Court, Christy Jett

Spotsylvania County Clerk of Court, Christy Jett The Clerk of Circuit Court is elected to serve their citizenry with over 800 statutory duties

The office of the Clerk of the Circuit Court dates back to the year 1619. From colonial days until the present, the duties of the office have changed significantly; however, the office remains as one of the most important for the citizens of every county and city within the Commonwealth. The Code of Virginia contains over 800 separate duties for the Clerk of Circuit Court. The Circuit Court Clerk

serves as probate judge, register of deeds, recorder of judgments and business assumed names, and local archivist. In addition, the Circuit Court Clerk serves as the official court administrator for all civil, domestic relations and criminal court cases that come before the Circuit Court. As court administrator, the Clerk creates and maintains all court files, oversees evidence, issues arrest documents and other court processes, collects court fines and costs, records the incidents of court hearings and trials, manages juries, and generally supports the judiciary in orchestrating court proceedings over which the judiciary presides.

This weekend our community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of three young men whose lives were tragically cut short in a car accident. These students were set to graduate in May from the same high school I proudly call my alma mater—a milestone that should have been filled with celebration, hope, and new beginnings.

While I did not know these young men personally, I do know members of their families, and my heart aches deeply for them and for all who loved these young men. No words can truly ease the pain of such a loss, but please know that you are in the thoughts and prayers of myself and this entire community.

May we all come together to support one another, hold our loved ones a little closer, and remember the impact these young lives had, however brief.

Please keep their families, friends, classmates, and teachers in your prayers during this incredibly difficult time.

Information for Spotsylvania County Property Owners: Deed Fraud Alert Notifications

We have received many inquiries about whether Spotsylvania County offers a deed fraud alert notification service, especially as surrounding jurisdictions have recently introduced similar programs.

Spotsylvania County has been offering this service since October 2, 2024.

Property owners can register to receive alerts that notify them of any activity involving their property records—an important tool in helping detect potential deed fraud.

Please refer to the attached memo for instructions on how to enroll in this service.
