Chai Culture Club presents Mid-Autumn Poetry Festival @ Lunarium!

🌙Celebrate the moon and harvest season this Mid-Autumn Festival with Chai Culture Club, in collaboration with Lunarium, as we feast on earthly delights and listen to moon-inspired poetry. Local poet Asyia Gover will lead a poetry workshop activity and host an open mic to hear each other's writings!

This FREE event is open to Asian and Asian American identifying community members ages 18+. We will have other opportunities open to the public in the future. Donations are encouraged for those who are able to contribute so we can keep our programs accessible.

What a week! Our new AYCL fellows came to the Summer Summit ready to step outside their comfort zones. Some curious about civic engagement, some unsure what it meant, and some honestly feeling a little “meh” about it. 😆⁠

After a week of reflecting on the story of self, us, and now, practicing storytelling and de-escalation skills, and building connection, our fellows left with new civic skills and excitement for Legislative Day. They gained more confidence to use their voices, speak up about the issues they care about, and become more involved in their communities!⁠

A huge thank-you to our amazing trainers from and for making civic learning fun and accessible, Chef Alice for expanding our culinary horizons and keeping everyone well-fed, and for giving us a beautiful place to rest and connect.⁠

We also want to thank our AYCL alumni who came back to share their experiences and wisdom with our new fellows. We’re so proud to see them build on what they learned and thrive in their own unique ways, from stepping into leadership as club presidents at school to creating a Spokane chapter of the Washington Youth Alliance . We’re hiring a part-time Advocacy Coordinator to support civic engagement and advocacy work, with a focus on youth and young adults.

This is an entry-level opportunity ideal for college students, emerging community leaders, and others early in their civic engagement or organizing journey.

If you're passionate about social justice, youth leadership, and making change through cultural art, environmental justice, storytelling, and civic engagement, we want to hear from you!

The Coordinator will work closely with ACA and ACL staff. Training, guidance, and support will be provided. Previous professional political or legislative experience is not required.

Learn about Indonesian Independence Day with Boba Buddies families this August! Local entrepreneurs and Mother-and-daughter tandem Mida and Izzie Wayuono will be our featured guests who will share about their people and culture through batik art activity and food from Indonesia! We will also have a special performance by featured youth musician, Christopher Anderson.

About our Boba Buddies guests—

✨ Mida Wayuono was born and raised in Medan on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia, and moved to Miami with little more than a backpack and a dream of building a life in the United States. Through years of hard work and an entrepreneurial spirit, she went on to own and operate multiple successful restaurants. Now based in Spokane, she brings decades of restaurant experience to Izzie’s K-Dogs, where she works alongside her daughter, Izzie. Mida is proud to share the culture, traditions, and spirit of Indonesia with the Spokane community.

✨ Izzie Wayuono was born and raised in South Florida, and grew up immersed in both her Indonesian heritage and the restaurant world. After eventually making her way to Spokane, she carried those influences with her and founded Izzie’s K-Dogs, a Korean corn dog restaurant in the heart of downtown. As a second-generation Indonesian American, Izzie is passionate about creating spaces that bring people together and finding new ways to celebrate and share Asian culture with the Spokane community. She’s excited to celebrate Indonesian Independence Day alongside her mom, Mida, and share a piece of their culture together.

✨ Christopher Anderson is a 14-year old violinist and pianist, and has been a member of the Spokane Youth Symphony for 7 years. He’s competed and performed in a lot of venues, and recently performed in Sydney Opera House and Sydney Conservatorium of Music in Australia.

Boba Buddies is a free monthly cultural program that nurtures community belonging for K-8 (kindergarten and grades 1 through 😎 Asian and Asian American youth in the Spokane area. Each session explores different Asian cultural identities through storytelling, art activities, and creative play. We provide refreshments and every month will have special guests!

This program is centered for Asian and Asian American families but we have selected events that we open up to the public or pop-ups at events organized by other community partners.

Many of us were already carrying a lot this year, and the fires across Spokane are making that weight feel even heavier.⁠

For Asian and Asian American, immigrant, and refugee families, moments like this can come with added layers, helping elders understand changing information, caring for multiple generations, navigating language barriers, and trying to stay strong for the people we love.⁠
⁠
It is okay not to know exactly how to feel or respond right now. There is no right way to move through a moment like this. Whatever is coming up for you is valid and welcome.⁠
⁠
If you need a little grounding space away from the news and social media right now, come take a breath with community together. There is no pressure to talk or share. Enjoy a free coffee or tea, take a moment for your well-being, or simply sit with others.⁠

Sometimes we come into a space needing support. Sometimes, just by being there, we become part of the support for someone else.⁠
