Last week, companies from C-Shift South Battalion conducted a drill in preparation for the upcoming wildland fire season. Crews simulated a fast-moving fire advancing toward homes on the bluff below South Hatch Road. For the training scenario, crews were dispatched to the location as they would for a real incident and tasked with determining the appropriate strategy and tactics for a rapidly spreading fire.

In this scenario, crews deployed hoselines along both flanks of the fire, beginning at the heel and advancing until they could work simultaneously to pinch off the fire's head. This strategy helps contain the spread of fire and is often used in conjunction with aircraft. Training exercises like this allow crews to practice critical decision-making, communication, and wildland fire suppression techniques before the start of fire season.

At 6:28 this morning, firefighters responded to 623 East Sanson Ave following reports of a house fire with occupants possibly trapped inside. Engine 15 from the Hillyard neighborhood arrived within four minutes and found heavy fire at the rear of the house, which had spread to the neighboring residence. Because of the fire's extension and ongoing reports of people inside, a second alarm was requested for additional resources.

Firefighters quickly deployed a hoseline to the backyard and found most of the fire on the exterior. Additional crews entered the home to search for victims. It was later confirmed that all occupants had evacuated safely before our arrival, including one adult who exited through a small, non-egress basement window. The fire was brought under control within ten minutes.

The fire remains under investigation due to suspicious circumstances, with the City of Spokane Police Department also involved. Fire investigators received assistance from Spokane County Fire District #4. No injuries were reported. The Red Cross was contacted to assist four displaced adults.

We are pleased to announce our new Fire Equipment Operators (FEO) as part of the first round of spring promotions. FEOs are essential to our department, operating fire engines and ladder trucks, managing water supplies at incident scenes, and maintaining mission readiness of all equipment. Their expertise in pump operations, aerial devices, and equipment support is critical to the safety and effectiveness of every response.

Beyond their technical duties, FEOs often serve as acting supervisors and take on leadership responsibilities as needed. This role is an important step for those seeking to become future lieutenants.

Please join us in congratulating Philippe Moore, Alexander Peltram, and Spencer Stocking

The latest National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook shows increased wildfire activity across parts of the West from June through September.

Many people think wildfire damage only happens when flames reach their property. In reality, ember showers cause much of the home loss during wildfires. Wind-driven embers can travel miles ahead of the main fire. They land on roofs, in gutters, under decks, and around combustible materials, igniting homes and structures far from the fire front.

Whether you live in a wildland-urban interface or a more urban neighborhood in our city, embers can threaten properties beyond the fire perimeter. Preparedness today can make a critical difference tomorrow.

Last Tuesday morning, firefighters responded to a single-vehicle accident at W Wellesley Ave and N Royal Ct involving an adult female trapped inside. Truck 13 from the North Hill neighborhood arrived within four minutes and found the vehicle had struck a tree, causing significant damage that extended into the passenger compartment. We are saddened to announce the passing of retired Spokane Fire Department Captain Daniel “Dan” Taylor (Badge #588), who died on April 19, 2026, at age 88.
Starting in 1963, Dan served the Spokane Fire Department for 28 years, retiring as Captain of Station 9. He was a dedicated firefighter, respected leader, and proud Marine who viewed his fellow firefighters as family.

Known as “Mr. Fix-It,” Dan could build or repair almost anything and found joy spending time with family and friends, and in the outdoors. He and his wife, Martha, shared over 66 years of marriage and many cherished memories.

We extend our deepest condolences to Martha, their children, grandchildren, and all who knew and loved Dan. Rest in peace, Captain.

Captain Taylor’s Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 13, at 1:00 pm at the Women’s Club of Spokane. All current and retired SFD members are welcome to attend. The family requests that no Class A uniforms be worn to maintain the casual atmosphere Captain Taylor preferred. Class B or civilian attire is appropriate.

At 4:01 a.m. today, firefighters responded to a house fire in the 800 block of East Indiana Ave. Reports indicated a fully involved basement fire with two elderly residents trapped inside. Engine 2 and Truck 2 from the Bemiss neighborhood arrived within four minutes and confirmed the basement fire. Truck 2 firefighters accessed the upper bedrooms by ladder, encountering dense smoke and limited visibility. Attempts to reach the basement via internal stairs were unsuccessful due to heavy fire and a stairway failure. Firefighters extinguished the fire through a boarded exterior window.

During their search, firefighters found a cat and brought it safely outside. Functioning smoke alarms alerted residents on the main and second floors, allowing them to evacuate before firefighters arrived. An elderly, adult female was transported to the hospital as a precaution due to existing medical conditions.

A fire investigation, with assistance from Spokane County Fire District #4, determined the fire was caused by combustibles placed too close to a basement heater. The basement sustained heavy fire damage, with smoke damage throughout the rest of the home. The Red Cross was summoned to the scene to assist with temporary housing for seven displaced adult residents.

This incident highlights the importance of working smoke alarms in saving lives. The Spokane Fire Department provides and installs smoke alarms free of charge for qualifying homes. For more information about this program or questions about smoke alarm coverage, please contact 509-625-7149.

Firefighters at Station 3 in the West Central neighborhood recently welcomed visitors from the West Central Community Center Head Start Program. The group showed great interest in fire station life, fire engine operations, the role of firefighters during medical calls, and the specialized equipment used for swiftwater rescues in the Spokane River. We are always seeking future firefighter recruits and hope to see some of these enthusiastic visitors back to join the Spokane Fire Department one day!

During our Spring Awards show, we recognized two of our outstanding firefighters for passing an annual, voluntary fitness challenge.

• 50 perfect push-ups
• 8–12 dead-hang pull-ups (based on body weight)
