📍 Crime Check callers: You may hear a new question.

As we prepare for the City of Spokane to begin handling its own non-emergency calls in October, we’re testing a new feature in our automated Crime Check system.

You may hear:

“To get you the right help, please give me the location or address of the incident.”

🧪 For now, we’re testing.
Testing will happen intermittently as we prepare the system for the October transition. We’re making sure it can accurately identify and validate where an incident occurred. During this testing period, calls will continue to route to SREC as they do today.

📍 Why does the location matter?
Beginning in October, where the incident occurred will help determine where your non-emergency call needs to go — to City of Spokane 311 for incidents within City limits or to SREC Crime Check for incidents elsewhere in Spokane County.

☎️ A tip for getting where you need to go faster:
Our automated system functions much like an advanced phone tree, listening to what you say and using that information to get you to the right resource — including a live person when needed.

When using the system:
• Speak clearly and answer the questions asked.
• Try not to interrupt while the system is speaking.
• Give it a moment to process your response and direct your call.

Trying to bypass the questions or get around the automated system can actually make the process take longer.

And remember: we’re asking for the location of the incident — not necessarily where you are when you make the call.

Starting this testing now gives us time to fine-tune the technology and gives callers a chance to become familiar with the new question before the October transition.

☎️ Crime Check: 509-456-2233

We’ll continue sharing information as we get closer to the change.
