Spokane Police Department K9 Unit

Spokane Police Department K9 Unit All of the SPD canines have been imported from European lineage. Documentation is provided for charitable tax donations upon request.

The Spokane Police Department K-9 Unit provides support to SPD members and other regional law enforcement agencies by safely and efficiently searching buildings and vehicles, apprehending suspects, tracking fleeing suspects, and protecting officers. The canines also provide support by finding evidence, searching for lost subjects that are in extreme danger, giving public demonstrations for civic e

vents and organizations, and teaching other law enforcement agencies basic and advanced K-9 skills and tactics. The K-9 unit has primarily had German Shepherd canines from Czechoslovakia and Germany, but also has Belgian Malinois canines from the Netherlands along with a German Shepherd imported from Hungary. In years past, several of the Spokane Police service canines were bred here in Spokane from previously imported Spokane Police service canines. The canines live at home with their Officer handlers and their families, and eventually go on to live with their handlers after they retire from service. Donations: The Spokane Police Department K-9 Unit relies heavily on donations to maintain the high standard of care that is required for dogs in the unit. Donations to the Spokane Police K-9 Unit go towards the care, maintenance, and training of the dogs. The Spokane Police K-9 Unit accepts donations for the purchase of dogs, equipment, and safety supplies. Please contact K-9 Sergeant Stephen Anderson by phone 509-951-3024 or email [email protected].

Rest in Peace, Jango.

It is with an extremely heavy 💔 that we share in the passing of Project K-9 Hero Program Member #373, K-9 “Jango.”

K-9 Jango, was a 3-year-old male Belgian Malinois, who honorably served with the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, for 1.5 years as a Patrol K-9, until an on-duty incident in November of 2025, left him paralyzed and unable to breathe on his own.

During his short, but productive career, K-9 Jango was deployed twenty times, and was responsible for eleven criminal finds, as well as one physical bite apprehension. K-9 Jango worked with Spokane County’s SWAT Team, where he specialized in High-Risk Tactical Operations, Search Warrants, Building Searches, Rappelling, plus Helicopter Operations and Hoisting.

On the night of his career ending injury, Jango ran thru a commercial grade double pane glass window in the dark, which left him unconscious and unable to breathe. The handler performed CPR on the scene, and all the way to the ER, in an attempt to save his partner’s life. Once they arrived, and they were able to get Jango stable, the ER Veterinary Staff immediately got him intubated, where a tube was placed in his trachea (windpipe) to maintain an open airway for delivering the oxygen he needed to survive.

PK9H was able to step up and pay the approximately $150 a day for the rehabilitation process while Jango fought for his life. That included the supplies needed, tubing, physical therapy, and 24 hour veterinary care from his doctor.

Please take a moment to mourn in the loss of K-9 Jango. We were honored to be protecting him, after all that he had been through fighting for his life, after protecting our communities and nation 🇺🇸! -

Local Veterinarian recognized for exceptional work and care of Spokane Police K9’s.

On January 7th, Spokane Police Chief Kevin Hall and members of the K9 unit presented Doctor Maike Bachmann with a letter of recognition for her work with the K9 unit and training provided to not only SPD, but other agencies as well.

Recently SPD transferred its care of the K9’s to the Pet Emergency Clinic. Members of the K9 unit expressed their gratitude not only for the amazing care provided for the department’s canines, but also for her willingness to provide medical and trauma courses during the Advanced Handler courses held throughout the year. This training was made available not only to SPD, but also to agencies throughout the region.

Thank you for your dedication to the K9 unit and commitment not only to SPD, but to all the agencies that benefitted from your knowledge and skill.
