Hey Zags! Looking for a way to get involved in giving voice towards positive institutional change for our university?
Presidents council is a group of students that represent GSBA and the student body on a variety of university committees and advisory boards. The council as a group directly reports to the GSBA President who chairs monthly council meetings where updates are discussed, and issues/concerns from students can be relayed back to administration/those in positions of power.

The application is live now on Zagtivities under “GSBA” and will close September 21st at 5pm. The link is also in our bio! Some of the councils include:

Academic integrity board

Athletic council

Green fun council

Parking citation review board

Student media board

Security council

Student advisory board to Foley Library

Student advisory board to Hemmingson

Undergraduate Professional Development
Grant Committee

Place Based Initiative Advisory Committee

Descriptions of each committee are on the application!
Please email [email protected] for any questions regarding the application!!

Thank you to the Gonzaga student body for electing us to serve you in the roles of President and Vice President. We hear you, we will represent you, and we will not let you down.

To our amazing campaign team, family, friends, and supporters, we can’t thank you enough for your everlasting love and support. For believing in us when at some points we did not believe in ourselves. For affirming us when we needed it the most. We couldn’t have done this without you. Thank you.

INCLUSION

We want to create an equitable Gonzaga learning environment and social community for all. We will accomplish that through:

1.) Navigating the student to faculty, student to admin, and student to student relationships first and foremost (as described in our accountability and courage pillar)

2.) Continuing in our current roles to highlight and advocate for student work in terms of (passion projects, activism, and advocacy work)
Examples of this include:
- Supporting UMEC, DICE, and cultural clubs.
- Supporting movements like and empowering passionate Zags to put their ideas into practice.
- Demanding student voices be represented, shared governance be enacted, and student activism be welcomed.

3.) Attracting student voices, opinion, and involvement in policy making that affects the university as a whole.
Examples of this include:
-IMPACT: affinity group for hiring and retaining faculty/staff of color. We are in current contact with the three faculty heads of this group in how we can get students involved.
- Mandatory Implicit bias training and cultural fluency training for all faculty and staff: this is something that is already being considered by the administration in being implemented as soon as next year.
- Council of Equity, Inclusion and Intercultural Awareness: restructuring and retaining institutional power. We are represented in this council and have voting power.
- Supporting advisory councils pertaining to:
Presidents council, Academic council, Hemmingson Center advisory council, and the Rudolph Fitness Center advisory council. We want to increase visibility and student involvement in these councils that are the direct outlets for institutional change.

Gonzaga University still has a lot of work ahead in achieving Inclusion. Inclusion therefore, is not a tangible goal this year, but an overlying focus of our entire platform. The only objective form of information that our University has given us is the Campus Climate Survey which was started in 2017. We have not only based our full platform off of what this University needs, we have correlated our immediate plans with the needs this survey asks for.

If we are elected, we are dedicating ourselves to not only continuing to advocate for the promising work that our fellow peers have started, but empowering passionate Zags to truly be for and with others.

COURAGE

Courage is challenging complacency and demanding progress by calling in and encouraging students to truly be for and with others.

We believe courage is an essential part of the human condition, the ability to openly speak against injustice and intolerance, difference and opinion, and resides in all of us. We believe courage is key to our platform because it is the way we can challenge our campus climate that we describe as one that envelops affirmation and ignorance. We believe Gonzaga students tend to be extremely involved, passionate, and caring. On one hand, we are easy to affirm each other in every light and not disagree, on another hand we only care about issues that affect us. Nevertheless, the issue is not that we don’t care enough to advocate for issues that don’t effect us, more that we don’t know where and how to get involved. Drawing upon our intersecting lived experiences in and outside of the classroom as GSBA President and Vice President, we truly believe we envelop a larger vision of the whole Gonzaga experience.

To this, we want to better advocate for and support Diversity and Inclusion events happening on our campus already by the likes of GSBA’s D&I team as well as the Unity Multicultural Education Center.

Courageous Conversations is a great example of an event that GBSA does that truly takes and builds courage, as it seeks to bring to light student difference of opinion in a constructive, raw, dialogue.

Our institution seems to affirm that the idea that the Gonzaga experience is "one size fits all" and that every student feels belonging and joy in their GU experience; rather, if we ever hope to build a community in which every individual feels truly safe, welcomed, and valued, we must break down the ignorance to the fact that not all students feel like they belong at Gonzaga, furthering progress towards engaging the full scope of our student body in courageous conversations.

APPRECIATION POST

"Hey, GU students! As voting approaches, I wanted to take the time to talk about the positive impact Michael and Maurie have had on my first year at Gonzaga, and why I am supporting their campaign for President and Vice President. Their commitment to accountability, courage, and inclusion have not only made me feel more at home on campus, but they’ve also inspired me to be the best I can be. To me, Michael and Maurie exemplify what it means to be a person for and with others. I feel that within the roles of President and Vice President, they can continue to develop GU through their love and service. Please check out .michaelmaurie to learn more about their platform! ❤️"- Miranda Abunimeh

Thank you Miranda for your extremely kind and uplifting words of affirmation. Words don't describe what this means to us... This is our purpose, our motivation, and our desire to keep pushing forward. No matter what, we strive to genuinely and humbly best represent ourselves in everything we do.

ACCOUNTABILITY

Accountability is focusing on GSBA's position as a liaison between the student body and the administration. We believe that accountability is three fold.

If we are elected, we hope to:

1) Use the power and privilege which accompanies these positions to hold our administration accountable in making decisions which consider the full scope of the student perspective.

2) Hold students accountable to stand with and for others, and to engage them in discussion regarding positive institutional and social change in efforts to build a more inclusive Gonzaga.

3) Break down the barriers which may prevent students from having the opportunity, if we're to be elected to these positions, to hold us accountable for the platform which we're running this campaign upon. We expect to engage with students regularly who may challenge us to be better.

Tangible ways in which we hope to implement accountability include creating a state of the university address, lobbying for increased student representation on university advisory councils, working on implementing implicit bias and cultural fluency training for staff/faculty and administration, and regularly table as GSBA President and Vice president to establish accessibility and accountability.

Please stay tuned for tomorrow when we'll be discussing our pillar of courage.

We’re so excited to announce that we, Michael Tanaka and Maurie Harbick, are running for GSBA President and Vice President! With much support and encouragement from many of our fellow GU peers, mentors, and family, we’ve launched this campaign on three foundational pillars: accountability, courage, and inclusion. These three pillars encompass both our desires for running as well as our aspirations for Gonzaga's future. Please follow this page throughout the next two weeks to learn more about these pillars and to keep updated on our campaign endeavors. We humbly extend the invitation for you to join us in continuing the progress being made towards building an inclusive Gonzaga community for all.
