Today we’d like to spotlight one of our amazing partnerships with higher education institutions, Gonzaga University. Through the guidance of Nursing Instructor, Molly Parker, PhD, RN, students from the Bachelors of Science in Nursing Program have supported RICS by creating materials to support our holistic Wellness program. From previous experiences in the field, Dr. Parker noticed gaps in care for diverse populations, and was inspired by RICS programming to incorporate this type of community engaged learning into her courses.
According to Dr. Parker, this internship has given students the opportunity to boost their cultural competence, cultural humility, and real-world insight. Students were able to gain skills in collaborative and reciprocal experiences, gain awareness of strong work happening in the community, and explore potential specialties for their future work.
Hear from some of the students about their experiences below!
“I loved learning more about the refugee and immigrant population in Spokane and about how to use culturally-grounded engagement with different patient populations. This is invaluable information to learn as I enter the field. I will be a much better nurse for the population because of my time at RICS.”
“At the RICS market...we set up a small market-style space where participants can choose from fresh produce and other grocery items at no cost. It’s been really meaningful to be part of something that directly supports the community, especially for individuals who may already be facing financial or language barriers. Also, we can spend this time getting to know the people RICS serves which
has helped inform our project. It shows me how access to basic needs like food plays such a big
role in overall health and well-being.”
Thank you Dr. Parker, BSN students, and Gonzaga University for continuing to support our Refugee and Immigrant Wellness Program!
