How can you tell if a tree is of the dogwood variety? By its bark! 🐕

Dad jokes aside, you may have seen these beautiful dogwood trees blooming across the city with white or pink flowers. The Florida dogwood (pictured) is the most common variety in the United States and typically blooms in mid-spring. The less common Kousa dogwood, native to Korea and Japan, blooms in late spring and early summer. Both of these varieties can be found in the dogwood grove at Finch Arboretum! 🌳

We know just how lucky we are to partner with Molina Healthcare again!

Summer is the perfect time to celebrate the Spokane Parks Foundation's mission: to share our magical outdoor spaces and to provide resources for vibrant, healthy, and accessible recreation programs and parks.

Thanks to Molina’s unwavering support, we can share Summer Parkways and our three summer pool parties.

Summer Parkways, Spokane’s largest moving block party, kicks off at 6 p.m. on June 16th in the Comstock and Manito neighborhoods. You can bike, run, walk, skate, or skip through those historic areas until 9 p.m.

But Molina’s commitment doesn’t stop there. Thanks to their pledge to return as a presenting sponsor, we will continue to offer three free pool parties in underserved Spokane neighborhoods. That means kids, their families, friends, and neighbors can swim for free and enjoy all the special treats that make summer swim time amazing.

Here’s a schedule for the Make a Splash events:

· Hillyard Aquatic Center, July 8 from 6:30-8:00 p.m.

· AM Cannon, July 22 from 6:30-8:00 p.m.

· Liberty Aquatic Center, August 8 from 6:30-8:00 p.m.

Thank you, Molina Health Care of Washington, for believing not only in our goal of sharing the wonder of a Spokane summer evening, but also in sharing it with the community. You’ve made a difference in so many lives!

Join us this Thursday as Mayor Brown and Spokane Parks and Recreation Park Board honor the Six Bridges Arts Association and their incredible staff and volunteers for 44 years of service to our community presenting Pig Out in the Park!

We invite you to celebrate their dedication with us: May 14 at 3:30 p.m. at City Council Chambers in City Hall.

And as a special tribute, the Gesa Pavilion will be lit pink that evening in their honor. 💗

We hope to see you there!

Our amazing staff and volunteers at Manito have been busy planting Duncan Garden with approximately 30,000 annuals!

This year, Gardener Lilly Wasson led the design, collaborating closely with the rest of the Manito team to select a diverse range of plants that will bring vibrant color and texture to the garden.

“We focused on bold, eye-catching colors using the tried-and-true annuals that are known to perform well in the full sun environment of Duncan Garden,” said Wasson. “We also added in a few new varieties that we are excited to trial this season.”

Visitors can look forward to seeing lilies, dahlias, snapdragons, petunias, zinnias, cosmos, geraniums, salvia, rudbeckia, phlox, and more this season, with peak bloom expected in July!
