Vera Water and Power

Vera Water and Power We are a community-owned, not-for-profit water and power utility. This page is not monitored 24/7. Elections are held the second Tuesday in December each year.

Vera Water and Power is a publicly-owned utility, supplying water and electricity to approximately 10,000 customers in the suburban community of Spokane Valley. Mission

To provide our customers the highest quality service at the lowest possible cost, while responsibly managing our resources, our employees and our environment. Overview

Vera Water and Power is organized, and operates, under Chapt

er 87 of the Revised Code of the State of Washington. The financial records, as well as others, are audited annually by the Washington State Auditor, and are available to the public during normal office hours. The District is governed by a five-member Board of Directors, elected to serve staggered, three-year terms by position. Background

From 1907-1908, Vera’s No. 1 Well was dug by hand, providing irrigation and domestic water to small farms and mini-orchards in Spokane Valley. The No. 1 Well still provides 3,000 gallons of water per minute to Vera’s system when required. Vera reorganized as an irrigation district in the mid-1930’s, and became a public agency instead of a privately-owned corporation. In 1946, Vera signed on as a customer of the Bonneville Power Administration to take advantage of the low-cost power that was being generated by the dams along the Columbia River. Currently, Vera’s power is produced by the Bonneville Power Administration. A small percentage is purchased through market purchase, and is distributed to customers through our underground and overhead electrical system. Ten wells provide water, pumping from the Spokane Rathdrum Aquifer.

Please be prepared for an extended power outage and initiate your emergency plans if needed.
Vera Water and Power will share updates as we receive them from BPA.

We also need everyone to limit their water use during this power outage.

Public Safety Power Shutoff and Wildfire Preparedness

The Bonneville Power Administration considered a Public Safety Power Shutoff affecting the transmission line serving Vera Water and Power today. A shutoff was not implemented.

BPA may de-energize transmission facilities during extreme wildfire conditions when continued operation presents an unacceptable public safety risk. Vera receives all of its electric power through a single BPA transmission source. If BPA de-energizes that line, all Vera electric customers will lose power. Water service may also be interrupted because Vera’s wells, booster stations and other facilities rely on electric power.

Vera does not have its own Public Safety Power Shutoff program. During periods of elevated fire danger, however, Vera may place electric reclosers in one-shot mode. This prevents automatic reclosing following a fault and reduces the risk of repeatedly energizing damaged equipment or vegetation. This safety measure may extend outage durations because crews must patrol the affected line and confirm that it is safe before service is restored.

Customers should prepare for the possibility of extended electric and water outages during periods of extreme wildfire danger.
