NATIONAL CPR & AED WEEK

Every second counts when someone suffers a sudden cardiac arrest.

CPR keeps blood flowing to the brain and vital organs, while an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) can help restore a normal heart rhythm before emergency crews arrive. Together, they can double or even triple a person's chance of survival.

We see firsthand how bystander CPR saves lives. That's why SVFD is committed to teaching CPR throughout our community, including training all our local high school students before they graduate.

You don't have to be a medical professional to make a difference. Learning CPR and how to use an AED can give you the confidence to act when it matters most. The life you save could be a family member, friend, neighbor, or coworker.

Lightning Strike Causes Attic Fire
In Newly Constructed multi-family home
**********************************************

During last night’s severe storm, fire crews were dispatched at approximately 8:46 p.m. to the area of 8th Avenue and Pines Road for reports of a duplex struck by lightning with flames visible from the roof. While units were responding, the reported location was updated to the area of 8th Avenue and Houk Road.
Arriving crews initially worked to locate the reported fire building and could smell smoke in the area. A Spokane County Sheriff’s Office deputy directed firefighters to a building further south on Houk Road where smoke was visible from the roof of a newly constructed multi-family residence in the 1000 block of S. Houk Road.

First arriving crews were on scene within six minutes and observed heavy smoke and flames coming from the eaves on one corner of the two-story structure. Firefighters conducted a 360-degree assessment and identified fire extending through the eaves near a second-floor unit of the building.
Command upgraded the incident to a second alarm at 9:05 p.m., bringing additional personnel and resources to the scene.

Firefighters initiated a coordinated fire attack, with crews accessing the roof to cut two ventilation holes to release heat and smoke while interior crews advanced to the second floor to locate and extinguish the fire. Firefighters inside the structure pulled drywall from the ceiling to expose fire within the roof assembly and complete extinguishment.

Crews simultaneously conducted a search of the structure and confirmed the building was newly constructed and currently unoccupied.

By 9:09 p.m., the fire had been knocked down and crews began checking for extension into surrounding void spaces and other concealed areas of the structure. At 9:24 p.m., firefighters were satisfied the fire had not spread beyond the area of origin, and excess resources were returned to service while remaining crews and fire investigators continued overhaul operations and worked to determine the fire’s origin and cause.
Investigators later identified the location of the lightning strike and determined the strike energized wiring within the structure, sending high voltage throughout portions of the building and igniting a fire in the roof assembly area.

According to investigators, fires directly caused by lightning strikes are extremely uncommon in the region. Since 2019, only four lightning-related home fires have been reported in the Spokane area, with two occurring during last night’s storm.

The investigation was completed and the scene was turned over to the property owner at approximately 11:14 p.m.

No injuries were reported.

If you see smoke or flames, call 911 immediately. Early notification allows emergency crews to respond more quickly and increases the likelihood of protecting life and property.

🚨 FIRE ALERT: SVFD crews are currently responding to a working duplex fire near Houk and 12th after lightning reportedly struck the structure. Please avoid the area to allow emergency crews room to operate.

DEFENSIBLE SPACE SAVES HOMES

Creating defensible space around your property gives firefighters room to work, helps slow the spread of wildfire, and increases the chances of your home surviving during fast-moving fire events.

With wildfire season approaching, now is the time to prepare your property.
✔️ Remove dead vegetation
✔️ Keep grass and weeds trimmed
✔️ Clear leaves and debris from around your home
✔️ Create space between trees, brush, and structures

A little cleanup now can make a major difference later. Wildfire preparedness starts at home, and the actions you take today matter.

THROWBACK THURSDAY 🚒

Back on December 23, 2010, Spokane Valley Rescue 8 was officially welcomed home during its push-in ceremony at Station 8.

Rooted in fire service history, the push-in ceremony honors the early days of the fire service, when firefighters pushed equipment back into the station by hand after returning from calls.

A proud tradition that continues to this day.

“There’s no doubt this is the best agency to be a part of in the state of Washington, and possibly even the Pacific Northwest. They set us up for success, and it’s challenging for a reason.”

Last week, Morgan Ashley with KHQ Local News joined SVFD Recruit Academy 2026-1 at the Spokane Valley Fire Department Training Center to get a firsthand look at the physical and mental demands of the 16-week fire academy.

She spoke with SVFD Firefighter Jared Cysewski and Recruit Anthony Gosline about the intensity of academy training and even took on part of the combat challenge herself to experience what recruits face during training.

As emergency calls continue reaching record highs, our recruits continue preparing for the responsibility of serving our community.
