Often when technology is being discussed, people will assume the terminology is understood by everyone (spoiler, it’s not). So, let’s define some of these terms, starting with basics and working up.
Processor / CPU – Two terms often used interchangeably which refer to the brain of any computer. This microchip processes services, commands, calculations, etc. for the computer. Just like our brain tells our body what to do, the processor tells the computer what to do.
Processors are measured in Gigahertz (GHz) which refers to how many sets of instructions can be handled every second.
Processors can also have multiple cores, which is like having multiple brains inside the chip and it allows the computer to handle more instructions at the same time.
To put it simply, more cores mean more things that can happen at once, and higher GHz means things can process faster.
If there is a technology term you would like explained, please send me an email at [email protected] or reply to this post and I will define more terms in the coming weeks. You can also stop by the SLPL and ask for Oscar.
