I saw my first woolly bear caterpillar yesterday morning and decided to look into the folklore that they can forecast winter weather. With its 13 distinct segments of black and reddish-brown, legend predicts the wider that middle brown section is (i.e., the more brown segments there are), the milder the coming winter will be. Conversely, a narrow brown band is said to predict a harsh winter. I counted 6 bands of the reddish- brown in the middle of this little guy. Maybe winter won’t be too bad.

However, for those of you looking to escape to the mountains this fall and interested in a more qualified predictor , Banner Elk, North Carolina will hold its 36th annual Woolly Worm Festival October 19th and 20th. Since 1978, the residents of the village of Banner Elk, nestled between the Carolina’s largest ski resorts, have celebrated the coming of the snow season with a Woolly Worm Festival. They set aside the third weekend in October to determine which one worm will have the honor of predicting the severity of the coming winter; and they make that worm earn the honor by winning heat after heat of hard-fought races – up a three-foot length of string. In addition to the Woolly Worm Races, the festival features crafts, food vendors, live entertainment and much more. Last year’s festival attracted an estimated 23,000 fans, 140 vendors and around 1,000 race entrants.

This weekend, Aug. 23-Aug. 25, Rumbling Bald Resort at Lake Lure and Chimney Rock at Chimney Rock State Park are hosting the Lake Lure Olympiad Sports Festival. The Lake Lure Olympiad is for all ages and abilities! The festival raises money (and health awareness and community well being!) for area charities.

This weekend marks the 3rd annual Dirty Dancing Festival in Lake Lure, NC, where much of the classic movie was filmed. In 2013, the Dirty Dancing Festival is proud to announce that they are an official event of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. "A percentage of ticket sales, as well as onsite fundraising efforts will be donated to help find a cure for Pancreatic Cancer."

Yesterday Wyn and I donated Blood at the local Lake Lure Blood Drive. If you have never considered donating to a Red Cross Blood Drive, contact them to find a location near you. For us, the location turned out to be less than a quarter mile away. I had set up an appointment a week ago but Wyn just walked in (he rarely knows his schedule in advance). We were both able to donate immediately.
