Spencertown Fire Company

Spencertown Fire Company Volunteer Fire Company The Spencertown Fire Company, Inc. It is one of two fire stations that provide fire protection for the Austerlitz Fire District.

(SFC), was established in 1917 and is located just outside the hamlet of Spencertown, which is part of the Town of Austerlitz in New York State. The Town of Austerlitz is approximately 48 square miles in the northeast section of Columbia County that borders Berkshire County Massachusetts. There are about 45 Spencertown Fire Company members, two thirds of which are active firefighters. The current fire station was built on five acres of land. It was completed in 2001 and consists of four truck bays, a large kitchen, handicapped lift, meeting/conference room, and small social room maintained with funds left by a deceased company member. The Spencertown fire station houses one 4WD Engine, one 2000 gallon Tanker, one 4WD Rescue Truck and one 4WD Brush Truck. Along with the Austerlitz Fire Company located 6 miles to the east, the SFC serves 1700 residents who reside in the Town of Austerlitz, and that part of the Town of Hillsdale which is in the Green River Fire District. The fire district has two large campgrounds and two highly traveled highways running its length, (Taconic State Parkway & NYS Rte 22) and several thousand acres of state forest land open for outdoor activities. In addition to fire protection, when dispatched, the Spencertown Fire Company provides fire district residents with limited emergency medical assistance in basic first aid and CPR/AED. The Spencertown Fire Company has an active Auxiliary. In addition to supporting firefighter activities, auxiliary members hold community events and dinners. Since 1985, proceeds from the fire company’s August Beef BBQ go toward a $1000 (now $1,500) Scholarship that is awarded every year to a graduating college bound young adult who resides in the SFC service area. Having many 30, 40 and 50 year members, the fire company has a long history of service to the community. Responding to approximately 100 emergency calls each year, the volunteers of the Spencertown Fire Company, Inc. work and train hard to provide the best emergency service possible.

A special shoutout and thank you goes to Chatham Rescue Squad EMT Laney for taking such great care of not just our firefighters but everyone on scene throughout the incident. She spent the entire time on scene making sure crews stayed hydrated, healthy, and ready to work. she must have handed out nearly five cases of water and checked on firefighters countless times throughout the incident.

Job well done, EMT Laney! Your dedication and willingness to look after the people working on the fireground does not go unnoticed. We truly appreciate you!

Today at 11:09 AM, the Spencertown Fire Company was dispatched to a two car motor vehicle accident on the northbound Taconic State Parkway at the Rigor Hill Road intersection.

At the same time, the department was also dispatched to an EMS call at Fox Hill Campground. Spencertown Rescue 51-46 responded to the EMS incident while Spencertown Engine 51-12, along with Car 1 and fire police units from our Austerlitz station, responded to the motor vehicle accident.

Upon arrival, crews found one vehicle remaining in the roadway and a second vehicle in the median. Both drivers sustained minor injuries and were evaluated on scene. Fire police personnel assisted with traffic control, reducing the northbound Taconic State Parkway to one lane of travel.

After the vehicles were removed all Spencertown units returned to service approximately one hour later

🚁 Training Night with LifeNet 🚁

This evening, the Spencertown Fire Company hosted a training session with the LifeNet helicopter crew, bringing together nearly 50 firefighters from across the area for an informative and hands-on learning experience.

The evening began with a hour and half classroom session covering critical topics including:

• Establishing a safe and effective Landing Zone (LZ)

• Radio communications with incoming aircraft

• Scene safety considerations

• Information LifeNet crews require when responding to an emergency scene

The second half of the training moved outdoors for a practical session with the helicopter itself. Members had the opportunity to learn about aircraft operations, emergency procedures, and firefighter responsibilities in the unlikely event of a helicopter emergency or crash, including the locations of emergency shutoffs and onboard safety systems.

We would like to thank the firefighters from Austerlitz Volunteer Fire Company, Chatham Fire Department, Ghent Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 , and Mellenville Volunteer Fire Company #1 Fire Companies, along with our own members, for attending and making this training a great success.

A special thank you to the Lifenet 7-1 crew for taking the time to provide such valuable instruction both in the classroom and during the hands-on portion of the evening. Trainings like this help ensure we are better prepared to operate safely and effectively alongside our air medical partners when seconds matter most.
