Last week, Spencerport firefighters focused on individual vehicle extrication skills using vehicle extrication equipment, stabilized vehicles, and providing patient care while working around trapped occupants. This week, we took those skills to the next level, responding into our training facility to simulate a two-vehicle crash, with both vehicles on their sides and multiple people trapped inside.

The scenario required our firefighters to quickly assess the scene, develop a plan, stabilize both vehicles, safely access and extricate the patients, and work together under conditions that more closely mirrored what they could encounter on an actual emergency call.

Training like this helps turn individual skills into a coordinated response and ensures our firefighters are prepared when needed.

Today, Spencerport firefighters came together with fire departments and members of our community to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001, honor the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice, and recognize those who continue to battle illnesses and cancers related to their exposure at Ground Zero.

As part of the 25th anniversary, our firefighters traveled throughout Monroe County for our 9/11 Steel Tour, a day connected by pieces of World Trade Center steel that were memorialized around Monroe County.

At each stop, we paused for an honor tribute, taking time to reflect on September 11, the lives forever changed that day, and the lasting impact it continues to have on the fire service and our communities.

We are grateful to each department and organization that welcomed us and helped make this day possible.

The pieces of steel may be different sizes and shapes, and each memorial has its own story. But together, they serve as a powerful reminder of the lives lost, the courage shown, and the sacrifices that continue to be felt 25 years later.

Today, we pause to remember the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

We honor the firefighters, police officers, EMTs, and other first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice. We remember the families who lost loved ones. And we recognize the thousands of people who continue to battle illnesses and cancers connected to the attacks 25 years later.

Tomorrow, Spencerport firefighters will begin our 9/11 Steel Tour, visiting fire departments and memorials throughout Monroe County that have preserved pieces of World Trade Center steel.

Our second stop will be at our own firehouse, at 175 Lyell Avenue, where we will gather for a remembrance and wreath-laying ceremony at our own World Trade Center steel memorial.

We're proud to share our team raised nearly $1,500 for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation at this year's Rochester 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb. Twenty-five years later, we continue to remember the 343 New York City Fire Department (FDNY) firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11/2001.

We also pay tribute to our only line of duty death in SFD history, Firefighter Robert Fowler, during this climb each year. Firefighter Fowler served his community in several ways including as a teacher and volunteer firefighter. We also recognize his amazing wife Gale, who attends this event each year, continues to support our organization, and the NFFF.

Firefighters and community members gathered at ESL Ballpark Sunday morning for the annual Rochester 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, honoring the firefighters who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

This Friday, September 11, members of the Spencerport Fire District will take part in the 9/11 Steel Tour, visiting fire departments throughout Monroe County that, like Spencerport, have preserve pieces of World Trade Center steel.

We invite our community to join us at 10:00 AM, which is the second stop of our tour, at Station 1, 175 Lyell Avenue, for a special ceremony honoring the lives lost on 9/11, the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice, and those who continue to battle 9/11-related illnesses and cancers.

During the ceremony, we’ll also share the story of how a piece of World Trade Center steel made its way to Spencerport and became part of our living memorial.

Tonight, Spencerport firefighters spent our drill practicing vehicle extrication skills including the use of extrication tools, commonly known as the “Jaws of Life,” to safely remove a vehicle away from a trapped patient.

Firefighters also reviewed best practices for patient care while the patient is still inside the vehicle, as well as techniques for properly stabilizing vehicles before and during a rescue.

Tonight’s drill was planned well before yesterday’s serious motor vehicle accident at South Union Street and Stony Point Road, but the timing reinforced just how important it is to continually practice these skills.

Yesterday, our members put these exact skills into action, successfully rescuing all five patients involved in the crash. All five patients were transported to URMC, and our firefighters were able to work together with other responding agencies to safely complete each rescue.

Emergencies don’t give us a warning. That’s why our members train so when the call comes, we’re ready.

Spencerport firefighters were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident with one vehicle reported to be on its side at South Union Street and Stony Point Rd shortly before 1:30 PM.

Firefighters arrived and found two vehicles involved, with three people trapped in one vehicle and two people trapped in a second vehicle. All five people were rescued and were transported to the URMC Trama Center by ambulance. Everyone was extricated from the vehicles in less than 30 minutes from us being dispatched.

Thank you to our law enforcement and EMS partners, Town of Ogden Police Department, Monroe County Sheriff's Office - Rochester, NY, Gates Volunteer Ambulance Service, Inc., and CHS for assisting us at the scene.
