The Owen County Sheriff‘s office conducted an investigation at Owen Valley High School involving threats to a female student from a 16 year old male student. Resource officers conducted a search after obtaining a warrant and discovered drugs, paraphernalia, and a firearm in the suspects vehicle that was on school property. The juvenile male was detained for further questioning. There are no further threats or safety concerns involving any students at Owen Valley High School at this time.

Today the Owen Valley Law Enforcement Pathway class presented their research assignment to our office. Savannah Leighton, Bradley Jesse, and Presley Zehr did a wonderful job describing the roles and responsibilities of the Sheriff’s Office and combated the fear of public speaking. We are proud of their hard work and the quality of their characters. Thank you kids, you are making your community proud.

We’re asking for the public’s assistance in locating a runaway juvenile. Lexie Michelle Mitchell (17) is a white female with long red/auburn hair and blue/green eyes. She was last seen wearing blue jeans, a white windbreaker jacket, and possibly white boots. Lexi is believed to have left the Cunot area this morning, 3/31/26 at approximately 11:30 am.

The Owen County Jail is hiring for the position of Corrections Officer.

We currently have two openings.

***Beginning hourly base pay is $23.96 ***

Second shift with pay differential is $24.36

Third Shift with pay differential is $24.16

Longevity pay is earned based on years of service.

Shifts are 7AM-3PM, 3PM-11PM, and 11PM-7AM and include working weekends.

Applicants must be available to work all shifts as needed.

This position performs intake and release functions, inmate monitoring, serving in the control room, preparing, and filing reports, supervision of inmates and other related functions.

This is an entry level position and may involve working all shifts.
Overtime is frequently available. Some overtime may be mandatory.

Health, Life, Vision and Dental Insurance,
Free access to the Proactive MD Health Clinic in Spencer.
Paid Vacation,
Paid Sick Leave,
PERF Retirement,

Today at approximately 10:15 the Indiana Statewide Tornado drill will happen. If you hear tornado sirens going off in the county, don't be alarmed. Take this chance to practice your safety plan in the event of severe weather.

Plan ahead! The river is expected to reach County Line Road east in Gosport sometime this evening. The flood gates will be closed around 8:00pm. Please notify those you know who travel that route that “take the long way around” season is here. Remember NEVER DRIVE ACROSS FLOODED ROADWAYS!!! Even what appears to be shallow water can be moving very quickly and is easily capable of pushing your vehicle off of the roadway.

The internet and social media is an amazing thing for many reasons, but an absolute super spreader of misinformation in many instances. For some reason people love to speculate and spread things they "know for a fact" on social media regarding criminal cases. In reference to the case involving the arrest of Samantha Mayhew, we have not released any information due to one imperative part of the investigation not yet being complete. While we understand the probable cause affidavit is public record and has been obtained and published on other sources, we disagree with this practice until all facts are made available. Please do not post speculations, theories, opinions, or rumors out of respect for the victim and her family. We have not made a press release or announced a cause of death, because a cause of death has not yet been determined. An autopsy was conducted today, and that information will be made public when it is available.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Beech Grove Officers who were shot in the line of duty tonight. Suspected shooter Kenneth Terrell Johnson (pictured) is still at large. If you have any information on his whereabouts contact Indiana State Police or call 911.
