COMING SOON:
ENHANCED PEDESTRIAN SAFETY NEAR SPEEDWAY SCHOOLS

Town of Speedway Departments and Boards & Commissions Collaborate to Bring New Safety Improvements to Speedway

The Town of Speedway is preparing to introduce another pedestrian safety improvement with the installation of three Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) near two of our elementary schools. Two RRFBs will be installed near Wheeler Elementary, with a third near Allison Elementary.

The project is a collaborative effort involving the Speedway Public Transportation Board, Speedway Redevelopment Commission (SRC), Economic Development Department, and Speedway Street Department, demonstrating how the Town's boards, commissions and departments work together to identify community needs and implement improvements that benefit Speedway residents.

The Speedway Public Transportation Board purchased the new RRFBs, with support and project coordination from the Speedway Redevelopment Commission and Speedway Street Department. Together, officials identified areas near Wheeler and Allison elementary schools as priority locations for the initial installations.

“This project is a great example of what we can accomplish when our Town's boards, commissions and departments work together toward a common goal,” said Kyle Markley, Speedway Economic Development Director. “The Speedway Redevelopment Commission's role extends beyond economic development projects. It's also about supporting improvements that strengthen our community and enhance quality of life. By working together, we're making meaningful investments in pedestrian safety and helping create a safer, more accessible Speedway for everyone.”

While Wheeler and Allison were identified as the initial locations, the Town and Transportation Board will continue evaluating pedestrian safety needs throughout Speedway and identifying opportunities for future improvements as appropriate.

WHAT IS AN RRFB?
Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) are pedestrian-activated warning devices installed at designated crosswalks. When activated, highly visible flashing lights alert approaching motorists that a pedestrian is preparing to cross or is crossing the roadway.

IMPORTANT SAFETY REMINDERS:
• Motorists: Slow down, remain alert and yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk. Be especially cautious near schools, where children may be walking or biking.

• Pedestrians: Activate the RRFB before crossing, look both ways and make sure approaching vehicles have stopped before entering the roadway. Flashing lights help increase visibility but do not guarantee that drivers will stop.

• Everyone: Stay attentive, avoid distractions and use extra caution around school crossings.

Once the equipment arrives and the Speedway Street Department is ready to begin installation, the Town will share additional information regarding the specific locations and installation schedule.

The Town of Speedway thanks the Speedway Public Transportation Board, Speedway Redevelopment Commission, and Speedway Street Department for their continued collaboration and commitment to improving pedestrian safety throughout our community.

Hoping all involved are okay!

COMMUNITY NOTICE:
PRECAUTIONARY BOIL WATER ADVISORY – HOLLISTER DRIVE

The Town of Speedway Water Department will conduct planned repairs to a fire hydrant on Hollister Drive on Monday, October 12. The work will require temporarily shutting off a main water valve, impacting water service to 28 homes on Hollister Drive, between 29th Place and Parkwood Drive.

Because a primary water main will be taken out of service, a Precautionary Boil Water Advisory will be issued for ONLY these 28 affected homes. This is a standard safety precaution when water service is disrupted in this manner. Required water quality testing must confirm that the water meets applicable drinking water safety standards before the advisory can be lifted.

IMPORTANT DATES & TIMELINE:

• Monday, October 12 | 9 a.m.–5 p.m.: Water service will be temporarily shut off while crews complete the planned repairs. Work is expected to be completed that day.

• Monday, October 12: The Precautionary Boil Water Advisory takes effect for the 28 affected homes.

• Wednesday, October 14 (at the earliest): The advisory may be lifted once required water testing is completed and satisfactory results are received. The Town will provide an official update confirming when it has been lifted.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR AFFECTED HOMES:
During the advisory, affected residents should bring water used for drinking and cooking to a complete boil for 3–5 minutes before use, or use bottled water.

All 28 affected homeowners have been notified directly by the Speedway Water Department through door hanger notifications. This advisory does not apply to other Speedway residents or businesses.

Please note that restoration of water service on Monday does not mean the advisory has been lifted. Affected residents should continue following the precautions until the Town officially announces that the water has passed all required testing.

Should you have any questions or concerns relate to this Community Notice, please contact Alonso Canchari with the Speedway Water Department at [email protected]

We appreciate the patience and cooperation of affected residents as our Water Department completes these necessary repairs to maintain our community's water infrastructure.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Leonard Park Playground to Close for New Playground Construction Beginning October 19

Speedway Parks & Recreation is excited to announce the upcoming replacement of the playground at Leonard Park with a brand-new playground designed to provide an updated, safe, and engaging play experience for Speedway families.

Effective Monday, October 19, 2026, the existing Leonard Park Playground will be closed to the public as construction begins on the new playground. The playground will remain closed throughout the construction process and is expected to reopen for public use in Spring 2027.

The new playground is part of Speedway Parks & Recreation's ongoing efforts to invest in and improve the community's parks and recreational spaces. The project will provide children and families with a modern play environment while helping ensure that Leonard Park continues to be a welcoming destination for recreation and community activities.

Please note that the playground closure is limited to the playground area. Other areas of Leonard Park will remain available to the public as construction allows. Visitors are asked to observe all construction barriers and signage and to stay clear of active construction areas for their safety.

Meadowood Park Playground Improvements Coming in 2027

The investment in Speedway's playgrounds will continue in 2027, with construction of a new playground at Meadowood Park also slated to begin next year. Additional information regarding the Meadowood Park project, including the anticipated construction schedule and playground closure, will be shared as plans are finalized.

Speedway Parks & Recreation appreciates the community's patience and understanding throughout these projects. While temporary closures are necessary during construction, the end result will provide new opportunities for children and families to enjoy Speedway's parks for years to come.

Questions should be directed to Parks Director, Tammy Smith, at [email protected] for the quickest response.
