University of South Carolina Upstate Police Department Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) Notice of Assessment

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
January 17, 2024
Spartanburg, South Carolina

The University of South Carolina Upstate Police Department invites the campus community to share its input about the department during an onsite accreditation visit by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies March 4-6.
The University of South Carolina Upstate Police Department has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) since 2016. This prestigious accreditation ensures the department adheres to the highest standards in contemporary professional policing. We are proud to acknowledge we are only one of three college or university police departments in South Carolina to have earned this prestigious accreditation.
CALEA Accreditation is a voluntary process and participating public safety agencies such as ours have demonstrated a commitment to contemporary professionalism. The program is intended to enhance organization service capabilities and effectiveness, serve as a tool for policy decisions and management, promote transparency and community trust, and establish a platform for continuous review.
As part of the March audit and review, the Police Department has established a telephone line wherein members of our community may call in accolades, concerns, comments, or questions regarding the USC Upstate Police Department. The line will be open March 4 from 2-4 p.m. The phone number to call is (864) 503-7755. You may also share your comments and concerns by email at [email protected].
For questions please contact:
Lt. Cheryl Wingo, CALEA Manager

Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Aldridge family and the entire Spartanburg Sheriff’s Department family for the tragic loss of one of their finest, Deputy First Class Austin Aldridge. As brothers of the badge we mourn together. Heroes remembered…..Never die!

They shall grow not old
As we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them
Nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun
And in the morning
We will remember them
Lest We Forget

People often ask what is the meaning of this seal on our patrol vehicles and name plates. The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) awards their accreditation to law enforcement agencies that have demonstrated the gold standard in public safety practices and procedures. Of the 200+ law enforcement agencies in South Carolina only 44 hold this “Gold Standard” CALEA accreditation. USCU PD is proudly one of those agencies. We have held this accreditation since July 2016. Additional information on CALEA and the accreditation process, including the list of standards, is available on the CALEA website at: www.calea.org.
