Winter looks different when you don’t have heat.

Right here in Spartanburg, there are neighbors—many of them seniors—living in homes that fall below basic health and safety standards. Not because they didn’t work hard… but because time, age, and circumstance caught up.

That’s why Rebuilding Together Spartanburg matters.

Through dedicated volunteers, strong partnerships, and supporters willing to step up, lives are being changed one home at a time—by providing safe, reliable heating so people can remain in their homes with dignity, safety, and independence.

A small monthly donation can make a very real difference.
If you’re looking for a simple way to help keep a family warm this winter, this is it.

Right after Christmas each year, the Santahatchie Program, led by Mary-Burgess Harrelson Allen and supported by her friends from Central United Methodist Church, complete several home repair projects for us. This year was no exception. Around 30 volunteers dedicated two full days to completing projects for 3 homeowners. Two bathrooms and the front porch were repaired at Rachel’s house and Dorothy received a new roof. Floors were repaired, new steps were built, and new kitchen cabinets and flooring were installed at Ora’s house. We are incredibly grateful to Mary Burgess and her volunteers! They are truly dedicated to helping their neighbors in need.

During this time of year, many good-hearted people choose to donate money to charitable organizations. Rebuilding Together Spartanburg is currently seeking donations to purchase new heating systems for two local families struggling with keeping their homes warm. In one home, a grandmother is raising four grandchildren aged 12 and under and uses her oven as a supplementary heat source. In the second home, an elderly couple relies on a single propane heater to heat their home. Our goal is to replace their heating systems with new units that will keep them warm for many years. Will you consider contributing to our initiative to provide safe heating for these families? If interested, please visit our website at www.rtspart.org to donate online or send a check to Rebuilding Together Spartanburg, P.O.Box 5852, Spartanburg, 29304. Your donation is fully tax-deductible and a tax letter will be provided. AND, several of our generous donors have agreed to MATCH any donation made for this program, meaning that your donation will be doubled in value.

A year ago yesterday we held a relaunch event to announce our new name and celebrate our affiliation with the national Rebuilding Together organization. We became the 112th Rebuilding Together affiliate in the country and the first in South Carolina. In the past year we have benefitted greatly from our affiliation with this national organization.

Today we recognized our anniversary by doing what we do best— completing home repairs for low-income Spartanburg County homeowners. Members of the Spartanburg Day School Interact Club installed much-needed hand rails for two next door neighbors under the leadership of three of our Rebuilding Crew members. And in a separate project, two of our Rebuilding Crew and members of Ms. H’s family removed carpet and torn vinyl in multiple areas of her house, repaired rotten floors, and installed new vinyl flooring so that she can more easily move around her house in her wheelchair.

We are so grateful for our longtime partnership with the City of Spartanburg. In the past 10 months we have completed repairs on 23 homes with funding from the city, greatly increasing the quality of life for each of the homeowners and their families. We provided accessibility improvements such as walk-in showers, ramps, and handrails, replaced rotten kitchen and bathroom floors, fixed plumbing and electrical issues, and replaced leaky roofs. Thank you, City of Spartanburg!
