Financial hardship may look different from one county to the next, but in every community across South Carolina, households are working hard and still struggling to afford the basics.

That's why the data matters. ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, or households that earn above the federal poverty line but below the cost of basic needs in their area. Measuring both poverty and ALICE households gives us a fuller picture of financial hardship in Cherokee, Spartanburg, and Union counties.

That picture helps local leaders and organizations like ours respond with data-driven solutions that benefit every community.

New doors are opening for Union County students 🎓

Two Union County high school students signed their letters of intent this week to join a new Work-Based Learning program, giving them real-world job shadowing experience in the manufacturing field.

The program was built through a partnership between Gestamp, Union County Schools SC, and Spartanburg Community College, connecting students directly to local career paths. Thanks to these partners for creating more workforce pathways for our community!

Powering critical services through crises ⚡️

Our Micro-Grant for Disaster Preparedness, part of our Spartanburg Long-Term Recovery work following Hurricane Helene, helped The Bridge at Green Street install a natural gas standby generator. This investment will protect their food inventory and keep services running through power outages.

"This investment has increased our confidence and capacity to respond when emergencies arise," The Bridge shared. Whether facing a major hurricane or the periodic outages common in their community, the organization is better equipped to remain "a dependable source of food, practical assistance, and hope" for more than 800 families served each month.

Everyone deserves dignity and a safe place to call home. 🪥🧼

That's what the American Credit Acceptance leadership team put into action as they kicked off their United Way of the Piedmont workplace campaign. The team learned about our partnership with A Place to Call Home in Spartanburg, then packed 288 hygiene kits for distribution through their Homeless Engagement and Response Team.

More than 3,000 people experience homelessness every day in Spartanburg County. 🏘️ United Way of the Piedmont connects donors, volunteers, and partners like A Place to Call Home so more neighbors have a safe place to land.
