Promote the values of attitude, gratitude, and service before self through aviation and STEAM education. Halvorsen Aviation Education Foundation advances aviation education, promotes youth leadership development, enhances community capacity for emergency response, and encourages humanitarian service on macro- and micro-levels. We provide education by giving free lectures and multimedia presentatio

ns on aviation, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) topics at local schools, community groups, and at our own facility which we will build at the Spanish Fork-Springville Airport. Further, we partner with like-minded organizations that are engaged in community service activities which support the Foundation’s objectives.

🇺🇸✈️🍫 What a day at Patriot Camp!

The Candy Bomber Foundation was honored to join Liahona Preparatory Academy in Pleasant Grove as they celebrated the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence at this year’s Patriot Camp. There was something special about gathering with these bright young patriots to remember the freedoms we hold dear, and the people who have worked to protect them.

We had a wonderful time sharing the story of our homegrown Utah hero, Colonel Gail S. Halvorsen, and the joy he brought to the children of Berlin, dropping chocolate and gum from his plane to children who had so little. One small act of kindness became a symbol of hope for an entire city.

That is the heart of the Candy Bomber legacy, and it belongs to all of us. These students learned that they don't have to do something big to make a difference. They simply have to be willing to share their own "two sticks of gum," whatever that looks like in their lives.

Thank you, Liahona Preparatory Academy, for letting us be part of your celebration. Here's to raising a generation of kindness, gratitude, and service. 🪂

Seventy-seven years later, the friendship still flies. ✈️🍫

On May 12, students at West Hills Middle School in West Jordan welcomed four students and two teachers from the Gail S. Halvorsen Schule in Berlin to honor the day the Berlin Airlift ended, and the Utah pilot who turned two sticks of gum into a legacy of kindness.

This year both schools held a chocolate bar contest. Students pitched their own bar, classmates voted, and the winners saw their creations come to life at Taste Artisan Chocolate in Provo. Ryan Jazayerli's "Halvor-Bar" (milk chocolate, caramel, and honey) was made to feel uplifting, just like Col. Halvorsen uplifted others. Hana Pohl's "Taste Berlin" bar carried that same spirit across the ocean.

Denise Halvorsen Williams, Gail's daughter and a member of our board, reminded everyone that her father never set out to make history. He just had a chance to do one small, kind thing. Her challenge to the students: be a "candy bomber in your own way."
Nearly 80 years on, the airlift is still making its drops. Not flour and coal now, but friendship and hope, delivered fresh to a new generation on both sides of the ocean. 🪂

We had a GREAT time with the 5th graders at Grove Creek Elementary in Pleasant Grove last Friday. Thank you students for helping prepare over 200 parachutes with candy to be given to children in hospitals, schools as well as in programs that bring hope and joy to those in need. It was a blast to finish off our day with a "rooftop" candy drop. And we have one question to ask... Who had more fun? The teachers on the roof or the students down below. We could hardly tell they were all grinning so big!! It is so much fun to be a Candy Bomber!!

On a beautiful Tuesday afternoon at West Hills Middle School in South Jordan, a group of visiting German students were gathered for an expected candy drop.

“Today is a very special day. On May 12, the people of Berlin celebrated the end of the Berlin Airlift,” German student Bayan Preis said. “It’s a day when we remember that West Berlin survived.”

Students at West Hills Middle School and the Berlin school both held competitions this year in which students pitched their own idea for a chocolate bar and presented it to classmates, who then voted for their favorite.

Denise Williams, who is a member of the board of directors for The Candy Bomber Foundation and daughter of the late pilot, encouraged students to be a “candy bomber in your own way.”

“You don’t have to be older, you don’t have to wait till tomorrow. You can do something small today,” she said Tuesday. “My father did not plan to become the chocolate pilot. He wasn’t trying to make history; he just had a chance to do one small, kind thing.”

German students join their American counterparts to honor Utahn Gail Halvorsen on the 77th anniversary when the Berlin Blockade ended.
