Oh, rats… literally.
You may have seen headlines about the recent hantavirus outbreak linked to a cruise ship overseas. While that situation is getting a lot of attention, it's important to know the risk to people here in Utah remains very low. The cruise ship outbreak involved a rare strain (Andes) and close-contact exposure in a unique environment.
Here in Utah, hantavirus is most commonly linked to contact with infected rodents — especially in places like sheds, cabins, garages, barns, or other closed-up spaces. This would be a rodent-to-person transmission, not person-to-person.
The good news? Prevention is pretty simple 👇
• Air out closed spaces before cleaning
• Don’t sweep or vacuum rodent droppings
• Spray droppings with disinfectant first
• Wear gloves when cleaning
• Wear appropriate personal protective equipment when cleaning up heavy rodent infestations
• Seal holes where mice can get inside
• Keep food sealed and clutter cleaned up
Symptoms can start out feeling like the flu: fever, muscle aches, fatigue, and headaches.
A little rodent prevention now can go a long way toward keeping your home and family safe. 🏡🐀
