At approximately 9:15 a.m. Station Southwest Harbor received a Mayday call on Channel 16 reporting a fishing vessel on fire with two persons on board in the vicinity of Mount Desert Rock, 18 miles off shore. The duty SAR crew swiftly responded on board the Motor Lifeboat 47311. While enroute, the two fishermen had abandoned their boat and were recovered by members of the College of the Atlantic who were conducting research on Mount Desert Rock. Once on scene, the crewmen were transferred to the Lifeboat and returned safely to family at Station Southwest Harbor and medical evaluation by Southwest Harbor-Tremont Ambulance. Outstanding work to all involved and a special thank you to the members of the college out on the Rock. 🛟

🦩 Coming to or through Southwest Harbor this weekend? 🦩

Starting tomorrow morning, the Quietside Flamingo Festival kicks off with the traditional pancake breakfast at Pemetic School, followed by the annual parade at 9:15 AM! The Southwest Harbor Fire Department is proud to participate, but our top priority remains your safety.

As with all events in Southwest Harbor, public safety comes first. Before the festivities begin, all emergency response agencies—including Southwest Harbor Fire, Southwest Harbor-Tremont Ambulance, and the Southwest Harbor Police Dept.—will meet for a coordinated safety briefing at the fire house. During this meeting, agencies review the event plan and an ICS 201 form, which outlines key details such as the event layout, safety concerns, resource assignments, and communication strategies. This ensures all agencies are aligned and ready to respond if needed.

Emergency personnel and resources will be strategically staged along the parade route and throughout the weekend to help keep things running smoothly and safely.

Special thanks to Harbor House Flamingo Festival for organizing this weekend’s events! Check out their full itinerary for more family-friendly fun around town.

Stay safe, be respectful, and enjoy the Festival weekend🎉
