Congratulations to firefighter Trent Riley for successfully passing his state test to become a certified firefighter. Firefighter Riley has an extensive background in wildland firefighting and has fought fires in California, Alaska and all across the upper midwest. At approximately noon on March 26, 2026 Southmayd Fire Department was paged out to a grass fire in the area of 289 and Elliott Road. Chief 400 was the first on scene and reported approximately a quarter of an acre on fire moving slowy. Due to the high winds today, Chief 400 requested mutual aid from Pottsboro fire.

The fire was brought under control by 12:30 All units were clear by 1pm.

Your Southmayd Fire Department would like to express our gratitude to Whitesboro Fire Department for their assistance today on a vehicle fire. Thanks to a quick response by both departments, the fire was contained to the vehicle and no one was injured.

This afternoon at 2:21 members from Grayson County Sheriff’s department, Southmayd Police Department, Southmayd Fire Department and many others were dispatched to a rural residence for a reportedly missing 4 yr old. After approximately 30 minutes of searching, members of the Southmayd Fire Department located the child and were able to reunite the uninjured , but somewhat muddy, child with his mother. Thanks to everyone for their help.

PSA. It is reported that there is “deep, standing” water on highway 82 under highway 75. It is best to avoid this area.

Today, Friday the 6th, and tomorrow, the 7th, are no burn days. This means no outdoor burning and if you are doing any welding/hot work, you must have a fire watch and method of extinguishment.
