On June 19, 1865 — 161 years ago today — Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and issued General Order No. 3: "The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free."

To learn more about the history and significance of Juneteenth, visit the Southlake Public Library's special display featuring books and resources for all ages, along with buttons and bracelets to take home. The display will be available through the end of the month.
