IMPORTANT UPDATE FROM THE SOUTHFIELD CITY CLERK

Southfield voters may have seen recent news about a U.S. Supreme Court decision involving elections. Here’s what you need to know:

If you are currently on Michigan’s Permanent Absentee Ballot List, your status has not changed.

You will continue to receive an absentee ballot for the upcoming midterm elections. You do not need to reapply or take any additional action because of the recent court decision.

The Supreme Court’s August 24 decision did not change Michigan’s voting laws. The case is still ongoing.

The Southfield City Clerk’s Office will continue to follow Michigan and federal election laws. If anything changes that affects Southfield voters, the City will share updates through its official communication channels.

Questions about your voter registration, absentee ballot status or upcoming elections? Contact the Southfield City Clerk’s Office or visit the City of Southfield website for official election information.

Today’s Back to School Pop Up Spray Park at the Southfield Public Library has been cancelled due to the possibility of thunderstorms and severe weather this afternoon.

We know many families were looking forward to cooling off and enjoying some end of summer fun with the Southfield Fire Department. With the possibility of storms during the event, the decision was made to cancel out of an abundance of caution and to help keep everyone safe.

Thank you to our residents and families for your understanding. We appreciate everyone who planned to join us and hope you enjoy a safe start to the new school year.

Fishing is a great way to enjoy Carpenter Lake Nature Preserve, and if you plan to take your catch home for dinner, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has information you should know before you eat.

Michigan tests locally caught fish for certain chemicals and provides recommendations for how often different types of fish can be safely enjoyed.

These are guidelines, not fishing restrictions, and are designed to help anglers and their families make informed choices about eating fish caught in Carpenter Lake.

👉 Swipe through to learn what chemicals have been found in tested fish, see consumption recommendations for Carpenter Lake and find out how to access information for other Michigan lakes where you fish.

Business Spotlight: Meet Southfield’s Newest Mediterranean Destination, Samoon Mediterranean Kitchen 🎉

This past July, our community celebrated a ribbon cutting for Samoon Mediterranean Kitchen, now open right here in Southfield! 🥙✂️

Samoon is the next chapter of Sahara, which the owners describe as a Mediterranean staple that’s been serving Michigan families for over 45 years — rooted in heritage, hospitality, and community. With their new name comes a bold, modern twist: a build-your-own concept centered on fresh-baked samoon bread, hearty bowls, pitas, and salads.

On the menu: shawarma, beef kafta, and chicken tikka, piled high with toppings like sumac onions, pickled turnips, roasted eggplant, and feta, plus house-made spreads like hummus, jajeek yogurt dip, and lemon tahini. There’s something for everyone too, with gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options, along with smoothies, coffee, and matcha lattes. They also offer full catering for your next event or gathering.
Bold, warm, and full of life — that’s the Samoon promise, and Southfield is lucky to have them.

Celebrating the people who show up for Southfield.🚓🚒

On Tuesday we gathered at Oakland Community College Southfield Campus for the Southfield Downtown Development Authority’s Greet & Eat Engagement Series to honor our first responders. Southfield Police, Southfield Fire, and Emergency Management & Homeland Security do the work that keeps this city safe every single day, often before most of us even know something happened.

A few things worth knowing about the teams we honored:

Our Police Department responds to more than 48,000 calls for service a year while still making time for Citizens Academy, safety presentations, Trunk or Treat, and youth programs.

Our Fire Department is 113 firefighters strong and growing, with a new Tower 5 aerial truck in service and Advanced Life Support upgrades across the fleet.

Our Emergency Management team works behind the scenes on the plans, training, and readiness that keep Southfield prepared before, during, and after an emergency.

And it is fitting that we celebrated at OCC Southfield, the future home of the First Responder Training Facility, where the next generation will train right here in our city. 🙌

To every officer, firefighter, medic, and emergency management professional serving Southfield, thank you ❤️
