Good Afternoon,

As e-bikes become more prevalent in communities across the Commonwealth, we thought we would share some guidance on their regulations.

Class 1&2 e-bikes are considered the same as pedal powered bicycles. They are incapable of propelling the rider faster than 20MPH and have motors that are less than or equal to 750 Watts.

Anything outside of those parameters are considered “motorized bicycles” under MGL 90§1. Class 3 e-bikes are not recognized by the Commonwealth.

Please ensure that the e-bikes you are enjoying fall within the appropriate classifications. Ride Safe!

Good afternoon Southampton,

I would like to acknowledge the outstanding work and dedication of Officer Dominic Rachmaciej.

Last Friday, Officer Rachmaciej, who is assigned to the midnight shift was at the police station while off duty. At the time, an older adult, who was the victim of a scam, arrived at the police department and requested to speak with an officer. Duty officers were tied up on other calls for service and not able to take his report at that particular time. Despite being off-duty, Officer Rachmaciej met with the victim in the lobby, took his report and learned that it involved the loss of $8,000 in cash from an elaborate and convincing scam. The scam involved instructions to send $8,000 in cash in a disguised package to be shipped overnight via a national courier service to an address in the State of California. Officer Rachmaciej researched the tracking number of the package and had learned that the package was still in active transport and near its delivery address. Officer Rachmaciej contacted the courier service who assisted in stopping the delivery, just 15 stops before its intended address!

Due to Officer Rachmaciej’s dedication to serving and expedient actions, the 75-year-old victim became aware that his money had been safeguarded before he even left the station. If Officer Rachmaciej had not interjected his services while off duty this money would have likely never been recovered.

The money was seized by authorities in California and yesterday afternoon the Southampton Police Department came into receipt of it and returned it to the victim.

Well Done Dominic!

🐢 Turtle Crossing Assistance – Above & Beyond! 🚓

Earlier today, Officer Yon took a brief detour from patrol duties to assist a local “resident” in need 🐢

A snapping turtle was attempting to cross the roadway and found itself in a dangerous situation with passing traffic. Officer Yon safely stopped and helped guide (and carefully relocate) the turtle off the road and back into a safer, wooded area.

Great job Officer Yon!
