A-Shift kicked off the first of four shifts training on the new Ladder 1, focusing on equipment familiarization, truck operations, and company responsibilities. Hands-on training like this is critical to ensuring our members are prepared to operate safely and efficiently when responding to emergencies throughout the community.

The new Ladder 1 will be a tremendous asset to the department, and today was a great start as crews continue building knowledge and confidence with the apparatus. Great work by all members involved.

We’re wrapping up Public Works Appreciation Week by honoring a local Yarmouth hero, Peter Burch.

Peter was in a Public Works Heavy Equipment Operator, operating the Town of Yarmouth vacuum truck not far from the site of the tragic trench collapse in November of 2025. When it happened, and without hesitation, he rushed to South Shore Drive and provided critical support to the Technical Rescue Team.

For more than 8 hours, he operated the truck to constantly remove water and sand from the hole as it consistently poured in as the rescue team worked in the high-stakes operation.

This week, he was honored by the APWA New England Chapter with this year’s Public Works First Responder Award, and we’re honored to have Peter as a part of our team here in Yarmouth.
