It's Fire Prevention Week! These year's theme is fire safety in the kitchen. Did you know that cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries?

REMEMBER:

1) Never leave cooking unattended. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of fires in the kitchen. If you are frying, boiling, grilling or broiling, do not leave the kitchen. If you are roasting or baking, use a timer and check it regularly.

2) Keep the area around your stove free of clutter and combustibles that can catch fire.

3) Keep a "kid free zone" of at least 3 feet around the the stove.

4) Keep a lid nearby to quickly cover and extinguish small grease fires in pots/pans.

5) Don't wear loose fitting clothing than can hang down onto burners and catch fire.

Early yesterday morning, a family here in town was alerted to a fire that was developing in their kitchen while they slept by their smoke detectors and this probably saved their lives.

Smoke detectors should be tested monthly, batteries should be changed every 6 months (in non sealed units) and detectors should be replaced every 10 years.

If you have any questions on how to test or service your smoke or CO detectors you can always contact the South Windsor Fire Marshal's Office for assistance.

SMOKE DETECTORS SAVE LIVES

At 1:30 AM on Wednesday morning (9/16/2020), the SWFD was dispatched to a home on Austin Circle for a reported dishwasher fire. On arrival, first-in companies found that the dishwasher was previously on fire, however; it had been extinguished by the homeowner. The sleeping residents were alerted to the fire by their smoke detectors, which allowed them to safely evacuate their 3 young children and extinguish the fire prior to it causing catastrophic damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the South Windsor Fire Marshal's Office and there were no reported injuries.

This video is a great reminder of how quickly fire grows and how differently people react to an emergency.

Always keep candles away from combustibles.

Make sure to check your smoke detectors regularly.
