South Whitley Playground Project

South Whitley Playground Project A dream becomes a reality! In June of 2008, the South Whitley Park Board decided that it was time to update and renovate the Down Town playground.

The current playground was installed in 1967 and the most recent piece of equipment was added was in 1990. After many years of good use, the various pieces have become broken, damaged, and thus are falling apart. And because the equipment is so old, it has become outdated in more than one way. According to certified Playground Representative, Hope McGonigal, every current structure in the park doe

s not meet the Consumer Product Safety Commission Guidelines and the American with Disabilities Act Guidelines in place today. The board's goal was to raise enough funds to replace the equipment with new, vibrant, and safe structures that will last for many years to come. And I'm pleased to say that we've reached that goal, and then some! With much thought, research, and planning, our goal was to install a new playground that will meet the CPSC and ADA guidelines and provide hours of fun and excitement. But we didn't stop there! We wanted to take this playground a step further and create an outdoor experience like no other park in the area can or does provide. And that is exactly what we've done. In 2011 we installed a beautiful wonderland designed by Katey Till and Colleen French called Doodlebug Village geared for ages 2-5 years old. The playground is a mixture old and new, combining the familiar slides and swings of yesterday's playground, with imaginative playhouses, ride-on bug toys, and musical instruments of today's imagination. Combining these two elements round out a child's play experience in a way that they can't get anywhere else. All of this enhances their social, mental, and active experience while at the park. What I'm trying to say: This is one special playground! Adventure Mania will be installed in spring 2013. Designed by Katey Till, this play area which is designed for ages 5-12 years old provides a fast, high-speed, physical place for kids to let loose and burn some energy. With five slides, a track-glide, monkey bars, a rock wall, slide bar, bridges, ramp, and ladder-- this area place has it all. Kids can be as wild and crazy as they want all while exercising and strengthening their bodies in a fun, constructive way. New swings are coming as well. Both sides are to be landscaped as well. Landscaping is designed by Renata Robinson. It's going to be a whole new park and it's going to be fantastic!
