These plants are free for the taking. While some of them look a little ragged, with a new home and care and feeding they will possibly grow up strong and healthy and produce things like tomatoes, cabbage, brussel sprouts, broccoli, hot peppers and eggplants. Stop by the library to get them while they last.

A Moment in Time (from the local history files at SWCPL): More often than not South Whitley residents have not had to travel far to satisfy their craving for ice cream.

In the early 1930s, Glenn Richard and Gerald Weller of North Manchester opened up the Double Dip ice cream shop in the northeast corner of the Kaler building, which was located on State Street, where Crossroads Bank now sits.

Richard and Weller later sold the business to Hubert Stump who sold it to Earl Black. Black renamed the ice cream parlor as Black’s Double Dip. Along with ice cream Black’s Double Dip served sandwiches, coffee and drinks. Earl’s wife, Vera, operated the store. It is unclear when the store closed although Earl and his wife moved to Valparaiso in the mid-1940s.

Other ice cream parlors came and went in South Whitley too. There was Maurice Reese’s Ice Cream Parlor on North State Street, and Johnson’s on the west side of the same street. In 1937, Les Blue bought an ice cream business from Lillian Monesmith that was located in the former Herr Brothers Bakery, which is now the Press Room Events Center.

For several years ice cream dreams could be satisfied in the summer with a soft serve cone at Spec’s and now Carol’s Corner but otherwise required traveling out of town. Local residents can now get their ice cream fix year round from Sugar Creek Meats and Treats, owned by Chris and Martha Trier.
