Disassociation. Its definition implies lack of caring, not wanting involvement, no connection or contact.
In this business of firefighting, often, quite the opposite is more true.
Lately, I have had to think about recent events and what must have been involved to get the job done. Sometimes we get into incidents that are difficult to handle emotionally, mentally or physically. For firefighters to do the job they must sometimes disassociate themselves from the reality of what’s happening or what is so horribly bad, that to think about it would prohibit them from getting the job done. There will be time later to reflect. Training, muscle memory, and true dedication takes over and lives are saved. Heroics happen, the unimaginable gets done.
True caring and dedication and commitment and the desire to help others is in the heart of every firefighter and with this, so is disassociation, enabling them to be all of the other things…

South Thomaston Fire Department is praying for all the first responders involved in the incident at Robbin’s Lumber in Searsmont. We provided station coverage for Rockland Fire for most of the day today while their crews responded to the fire.

This is one of the first steps in extricating a person from a wrecked vehicle. Stabilization is important to keep the patient, as well as first responders safe. Your fire and ambulance teams on the job this morning on Elm Street. Thank you for your patience and understanding if you had to be delayed or rerouted while we worked in the street.

Today at 1813 hours the South Thomaston Fire Department along with mutual aid partners, were scrambled for a structure fire 🔥 on Buttermilk Lane. Fortunately the fire was contained at the point of origin being in insulation and flooring. Quick work by crews overhauled and extinguished any remaining fire and the house was vented to clear smoke. Units were cleared by 2013 hours. The fire was caused by attempts to thaw frozen water pipes. Please be careful out there people !! Stay safe!!

PSA. With the upcoming storm please make preparations ahead of time to protect yourself and your home!! Be mindful that heating vents that normally are fine may get buried with deeper snow that’s predicted to fall. Protect pipes from freezing, many home fires are a result of thawing pipes improperly. Get your travel errands done ahead of the snow and then stay home!!! Yes, I know it’s pretty out riding in the snow, but it’s also dangerous and it complicates things for plows and first responders!! Stay safe out there!!

In this business of “Firefighting “ every single job is the most important job on the fire ground. Whatever your task might be, it needs to be done to the best of your ability and to the degree required for a successful outcome. Whether you are interior attack or a pump operator, EMS support or safety officer, incident commander or water supply officer, your duty has to be the strongest link in the chain. The person handing out water to the interior crew is the most welcome sight when you are coming out of a burning hell. Don’t take your job for granted, don’t ever think is not important. Don’t ever let your job be the weak link.
Stay safe out there…

I can’t begin to express my gratitude to the first responders who dropped everything today to help a neighbor in desperate need as their home was being destroyed by fire. South Thomaston Fire and their mutual aid partners responded to a structure fire at just after noon time, clearing four hours later. Thank you all!!

I’ve noticed several times recently people walking in the hayfield preserves, both on the Saint George Road and ButtermilkLane, with dark colored clothing, no orange or brightly colored clothes. While Maine does have very strict target identification laws, it is hunting season and accidents do happen !! Please try to avoid becoming a very sad statistic!!
