El Camino High School senior Matteo Woo (‘24) recently won a full tuition music scholarship to UNLV after attending the Essentially Ellington Regional Jazz Festival with the El Camino jazz band on February 16, 2024.

Matteo piqued the interest of UNLV's Jazz Studies Department after performing clarinet solos during the Colts’ rendition of Duke Ellington standards “Solid Old Man” and “Pyramid”.

Judges subsequently selected Matteo as one of four “outstanding soloists” from among the 24 high school jazz bands that performed during the festival’s first day.

This provided the clarinetist with another opportunity to perform on stage during the festival’s final concert event on Saturday, February 17.

According to David Loeb, director of UNLV's Division of Jazz and Commercial Music, Matteo's performance was “outstanding”.

El Camino High School senior Maya Thompson ('24) was inducted into the County of San Mateo Women's Hall of Fame on .

"Maya was honored in part for her extensive community service," said El Camino High Principal James Briano. "She currently volunteers for Cancer Kids First and helps Ukrainian students learn English through an online tutoring program called Project Speak Together, while holding down a part-time job teaching gymnastics to preschool children."

In August 2023, Thompson also received a National African American Recognition Award (NAARA) from the College Board for her strong performance on the Preliminary SAT (PSAT) and Advanced Placement (AP) exams.

NAARA recipients must maintain a grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher and also: (1) score in the top 10% of the Preliminary SAT (PSAT) in their state or (2) earn a score of three or higher on two or more AP exams in 9th and 10th grade.

Scoring in the top 10% of the PSAT in one’s state as a high school sophomore is the most common pathway to becoming a National Merit Scholar.

Skyline Elementary fifth grade teacher Elena Jinzo has realized her long-held dream of creating a school garden.

“It’s been a dream for five, six, seven years,” said Jinzo at the garden’s opening on October 18, 2023. “It’s just a super happy feeling. This is actually the joy after a lot of hard work.”

The garden came to be thanks in part to Hands On Bay Area, which connected Jinzo with a group of 250 volunteers from Genentech, who helped lay the sod and flower beds for the school’s new garden during the summer of 2023.

It's official. The South City High varsity team is the second best team in the California Interscholastic Federation's (CIF) division 6A for the 2023-24 season.

The Warriors were playing for a chance to go to state and the title of best team in Northern California in the December 2, 2023, regional final, which they lost to Colusa High School.

To get to this point, defeated Santa Teresa High School 13-7 on November 25, 2023, to claim the CIF Central Coast Section (CCS) division 5 football championship.

The reached the CCS championship game for the first time since 1989 by scoring a touchdown on fourth-and-goal with 10 seconds left in the game against Leland High School, Sjusd a week earlier on November 17, 2023.

South City has now won three CCS football championships in school history: two CCS Division II North championships in 1981 and 1989 and this most recent Division V championship in 2023.

The 12 wins this year's team has notched is a school record, eclipsing the 11-0 team of 1989.

It's an amazing turnaround for South City High, which was on the verge of disbanding its football program after being unable to field a varsity football team in 2021.

Congratulations to the Warriors and Coaches Kolone Pua and Frank Moro! Thank you for this historic season!
