The Kiwanis Club of South San Francisco had the pleasure of welcoming Timothy Smith, Roger Hurlbut, and LeAnn Thornton from Honor Flight Bay Area Foundation.

We truly appreciated the opportunity to learn more about this incredible nonprofit organization, whose mission is dedicated to honoring America’s veterans for their service, sacrifices, and commitment to our country.

We were inspired to learn how Honor Flight began with a simple yet powerful mission: to honor our nation’s veterans by bringing them to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials built in recognition of their service and sacrifice.

Their presentation was both engaging and inspiring, and reflected the resilience, dedication, and gratitude at the heart of the Honor Flight mission.

Thank you Timothy, Roger, and LeAnn for joining us and for the important work you do to ensure our veterans are recognized, remembered, and honored. 🇺🇸

We're excited about the launch of our new literacy project "Kiwanis Book Buddies" on Friday, May 22, 2026, at Sunshine Gardens Elementary School in South San Francisco.

Supporting this program were leadership from the SSFUSD district offices Dr. Shawnterra Moore, Trustees Amy Lam, Amanda Anthony, and Lindsay Summers, Sunshine Gardens Principal Leticia Gonzalez, SSF Councilmember Flor Nicolas, and Carmen Quan from Genentech. Also Kiwanis members Patrick Cheng, Linda Parenti, John Pettigrew, Jim Kaestner, and Bill Benavides.

The Kiwanis Club, in collaboration with the South San Francisco Unified School District, is launching this pilot program as a multi-year literacy engagement project designed to provide an open free library of books for students. Children will be encouraged to choose books to take home, return to share with others, or give to friends & family members.

The primary focus of the program is to support students from TK through Grade 5. Our pilot school is Sunshine Gardens Elementary School, a Title I school.

We ask for your help in getting the word out about this literacy program. Please reach out if you'd like to donate books to this project.

We were honored to welcome guest speaker, South San Francisco Fire Chief Matt Samson.

Chief Samson shared informative and insightful slides highlighting the Fire Department’s history, exciting developments, and future plans for serving our community.

With 25 years in emergency services—including the last 22 years serving South San Francisco—Chief Samson has dedicated his career to public safety. He spoke about the importance of regional partnerships in strengthening emergency response efforts and shared how the department is focusing on wildfire preparedness, evacuation planning, and emergency management in the urban interface.

♻️ Is it REALLY recyclable?

Plastic bottles, jugs, tubs, and clamshell containers made from #1, #2, or #5 plastic belong in your blue recycling bin. Think water bottles, milk jugs, yogurt tubs, and berry containers.

🚫 Plastic cups, utensils, plates, and mixed-material plastics do NOT belong in the blue bin — even if they have a recycling symbol.

When in doubt, remember:
✔️ Rigid #1, #2, or #5 containers = recycle
❌ Everything else = gray garbage bin

Recycling right matters more than recycling more! 💙
