On Tuesday, June 9, the City of South San Francisco celebrated the groundbreaking of the expanded Westborough Preschool at 2380 Galway Drive.

City leaders, staff, families, and community members gathered to mark this exciting milestone and a major investment in early childhood education.
The project reflects the City’s continued commitment to expanding access to quality preschool and childcare, helping children learn, grow, and thrive.
A special thank to Congressman Kevin Mullin for securing $850,000 in federal funding to support this important expansion.

This celebration marked not just the start of construction, but the future of opportunity for South San Francisco’s youngest learners.

Betty Battaglia 🌻
We join our community in mourning the loss of Commissioner Betty Battaglia, a respected leader and cherished member of our South San Francisco Parks and Recreation family.

A longtime resident and Parks and Recreation Commissioner since 2013, Betty was a passionate advocate for parks, seniors, youth, and inclusive community spaces. Her thoughtful leadership influenced landmark projects like the Library | Parks and Recreation Center and the new Aquatic Center, ensuring they would serve residents of all ages for generations to come. Betty, in her collaborative way, championed for us to look at programs and facilities through an age-friendly lens, even well before we and others had an Age-Friendly Master Plan. Beyond her many accomplishments, Betty will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, and genuine care for others. Whether volunteering at community events, supporting staff, or simply sharing homemade cookies, she made everyone feel welcome and valued.

Betty’s legacy of service, compassion, and community spirit will continue to inspire us. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, fellow commissioners, and all whose lives she touched. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

About the video:
In May 2026, Betty Battaglia was honored with the California Parks and Recreation Society’s District 4 Distinguished Professional Award, their highest honor. It was a privilege for the South San Francisco Parks and Recreation team to nominate and recognize Betty for her extraordinary service and lasting impact on our community. An inspiration to so many, Betty’s unwavering dedication, humility, and passion for parks and recreation have left an enduring legacy that will continue to benefit generations to come.
