The City Manager has rescinded the emergency regulation that prohibits the use of re-usable bags at grocery and other retail stores. This order, issued on March 26, was based on best available information at the time which suggested these bags could help spread the coronavirus. We now know that such spread, while not impossible, is less likely than first thought.

The State's guidance checklist for retail store operators also changed on July 16, and allowed for individual stores to determine whether or not to allow re-usable bags at their locations. We urge residents and visitors to check with your stores ahead of time to determine whether or not you should bring your re-usable bags.

Last night, the South Portland City Council declared a Climate Emergency on the heels of the Maine Youth Climate Strike. We firmly believe that South Portland and the surrounding communities have the insight, drive, capacity, and resources to work for environmental justice and make transformative change, fully understanding that when we work together across social and city borders, we can build stronger networks to combat climate change in our region. Now, let’s get to work!
