Twenty-five years later, we remember.

On September 11, 2001, 2,977 lives were lost in attacks that forever changed our nation. We remember the victims, their families, and the first responders who ran toward danger that morning.

South Plainfield was among the many communities that answered the call, with Officers Brian Iarrapino, Wayne Diana, and Daniel Noonan responding to Ground Zero to assist.

Today, members of the South Plainfield Police Department took part in remembrance ceremonies, with our Honor Guard standing in tribute to all those lost on September 11, 2001.

Never Forget.

The South Plainfield Police Department is now hiring. We're hosting a Recruitment Open House on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at 6:00 PM. Come out to meet our officers, ask questions, and learn what a career wearing the badge in South Plainfield looks like.

Our officers respond to a good variety of calls for service, so no two days look the same. The department also offers room to grow, with opportunities to move into specialty units like Criminal Investigations, the Traffic Safety Division, and the Juvenile Bureau, along with specialty training opportunities.

If you're ready to build a meaningful career serving your community, we'd love to see you at the Open House.

We want to say thank you to everyone who came out for Ice Pops with the Cops! It was great getting to spend some time with our community, enjoy some cold treats, and just chat with neighbors of all ages on a hot day. A special thanks to the South Plainfield Public Library for teaming up with us again this year to make it happen. We love these moments outside of the usual calls and patrols — see you all at the next one!

Monday evening was one worth celebrating at the South Plainfield Police Department! Four officers were promoted, each having built a career here and earned every bit of this recognition.

Lieutenant Zachary Melanson began with the department as a 9-1-1 Communications Operator before joining Patrol, and moved to the Juvenile Division as a School Resource Officer in 2017. Promoted to Sergeant in 2022, he recently graduated from the New Jersey Chiefs of Police Command and Leadership Academy.

Lieutenant Justin Melanson is a 14-year veteran who served five years in Patrol before becoming the senior School Resource Officer and a L.E.A.D. instructor in 2018. He was promoted to Sergeant in January 2021 and now supervises the Traffic Safety Unit.

Sergeant Brian Zielinski transferred to South Plainfield in December 2011 and worked night shift in Patrol for eleven years before joining the Traffic Safety Unit in 2023. He serves as a Drug Recognition Expert, Crash Reconstructionist, and Swift Water Rescue Technician, and his commendations include two 200 Club Valor Awards, the Medal of Honor, and two Life Saving Awards.

Sergeant Anthony Louise joined the department in January 2017, served in Patrol as a Field Training Officer, and was later selected as a School Resource Officer in the Juvenile Division. He also serves as a Humane Law Enforcement Officer and Deputy OEM Coordinator, and is a recipient of the Life Saving Medal.

Nothing about these promotions came easy. Each of these officers rose through the ranks here. All four serve the same community they grew up in, and each one put in the years and the work to get to this point. Thank you to the Mayor and Council and the borough administration for the support that makes nights like this possible.

Congratulations to all four.
