The South Plainfield Police Department would like to recognize Lieutenant Peter Magnani for his decades of dedicated service to our community.

Lieutenant Magnani’s commitment to public service began at just 16 years old as a volunteer with the South Plainfield Rescue Squad. He later served as a police dispatcher before joining the South Plainfield Police Department, where he rose through the ranks and retired as a Lieutenant. His professionalism, leadership, and commitment to the residents of South Plainfield have left a lasting impact on both the department and the community he proudly served.

Throughout his career, Lieutenant Magnani served in a variety of specialized roles, including Field Training Officer, Drug Recognition Expert, and member of the Traffic Safety Bureau. He was also the department’s First Aid and CPR Instructor, helping train and prepare generations of officers to serve the community. Even in retirement, Lieutenant Magnani will continue serving the borough by providing First Aid and CPR training to residents and organizations throughout the community. In addition, he served as President of the South Plainfield PBA, advocating for his fellow officers and further demonstrating his dedication to the profession.

We thank Lieutenant Magnani for his many years of service to the South Plainfield community and congratulate him on an outstanding career! Pete Mags

The 200 Club of Middlesex County of Middlesex County held their 52nd annual awards ceremony on May 21, 2026. Five South Plainfield officers were honored at the event.

On October 7, 2025, South Plainfield officers responded to Hadley Commons Mall for reports of an armed male wearing a ski mask and gloves. When officers attempted to engage the suspect, he charged at them with a knife. Officers showed tremendous restraint and professionalism, holding their positions and continuing verbal de-escalation efforts while protecting civilians in the area. Officer Marks ultimately gained the suspect’s trust and convinced him to surrender peacefully without force. Outstanding work by Officers Molinaro, Marks, Polizzano, Parajon, and Lieutenant Bullock.

On Friday, May 1, 2026, the Borough of South Plainfield held a dedication ceremony honoring fallen South Plainfield Police Officers Richard H. Conklin and William J. Cady with the official renaming of the Stelton Road Overpass as the “Officers Richard H. Conklin and William J. Cady Memorial Overpass.”
Both officers tragically lost their lives in the line of duty near the overpass while serving the South Plainfield community. Officer Conklin was killed on January 21, 1972, and Officer Cady on April 19, 1975. Both were also proud United States Marine Corps veterans.
Family members, active and retired officers, local officials, and community members gathered to remember their sacrifice and ensure their legacy will never be forgotten.

South Plainfield Police Department Recognized our Design a sign contest winner at the April 20th Council Meeting.

Leah Stembridge, Margaret Kupcho Danielys Reyes Cortorreal and Cecelia Cassio were chosen as this year’s inaugural winners. The Design a Sign contest kicked off the S.P.E.E.D. initiative which was grant funding received through New Jersey DHTS. The grant focuses on unsafe speed related crashes on Durham Ave and New Brunswick as well as pedestrian enforcement at high volume traffic crosswalks.

In addition to their designs being made into lawn signs, they received a $25 Visa gift card and lunch on the South Plainfield Traffic Safety Unit.

There were so many great designs. We want to thank all those students who participated. We hope to see more participants in fall of 2026!

If anyone is interested in any of the lawn signs, please reach out to the Traffic Safety Unit. We can deliver them to your address. Just email [email protected] or [email protected] or call 908-226-7678 and leave your address.
