The City of South Milwaukee will begin a mastic repair project in June, that will continue throughout the entire month. Thanks to our Public Works professionals, our roads will have a longer lifespan and this will help reduce the need for more expensive repairs down the line.

What is mastic repair?
It is a hot-poured blend of polymer-modified asphalt, sand, and fine aggregate. This material is used on cracks that are wider than 1.5 inches which helps provide structural strength and prevents sinkage.

Some properties of mastic repair materials:
• High Elasticity: Resistance to brittleness or softness (depending on weather conditions).
• Waterproofing: The repaired area is sealed shut, helping to fight against erosion.
• Rapid Curing: Mastic cools down and cures rather quick, allowing the repaired area to be opened within 30 – 60 minutes.

Residents may experience temporary driveway or lane closure while repairs are being done but this ensures that the crew members are safely and effectively applying the materials.

In honor of NPWW, we lit the Hoan bridge to celebrate Public Works professionals in the city of South Milwaukee. They contribute to all the planning, designing, building, and maintenance in the infrastructure that support a high-quality life.

For this year's theme, “Rooted in Service, Powered by Community”, we acknowledged the roots of service that run deep in public works. From the seen (roads and bridges) to the unseen (water and sewer systems).
