Training Tuesday, June 2nd:

While not our usual training night, SLFD was invited by one of our mutual aid partners, Northfield Township Fire Department, to participate in a multi-department, multi-county training exercise at Whitmore Lake High School.

The training focused on rural water supply operations, an essential skill when hydrants are limited or unavailable. Crews practiced ladder operations, establishing a water supply, and supplying and discharging handlines. These joint training opportunities allow members to gain valuable repetitions, strengthen mutual aid relationships, and ensure seamless operations when departments work together on emergency scenes.

Thank you to Northfield Township Fire for the invitation and coordination of this training opportunity.

To follow up on our previous post regarding lithium-ion batteries, here are the safe handling and disposal guidelines.

Discontinue Use Immediately: If a battery emits an unusual odor, changes color, generates excessive heat, leaks, or changes shape, stop using the device.

Move the item away from flammable materials and, if safe, and dial 9-1-1.

Terminal Preparation: Before storage or transport, prevent short-circuiting by placing clear or electrical tape over the battery's metal contacts (terminals).

Safe Charging: Charge devices on a hard, flat surface rather than soft surfaces like beds or couches. Always use manufacturer-provided cables and avoid overcharging.

Storage Environment: Keep spare and discarded batteries at room temperature away from combustible materials. Store damaged or discarded batteries outdoors if possible, or in a metal container with a lid.

⚠️ PSA: Lithium-Ion Battery Safety ⚠️

Today, our department responded to a call involving a homemade lithium-ion battery that had been dropped off for recycling at a local business and was actively smoking.

Lithium-ion batteries can become extremely dangerous when damaged, improperly made, modified, or used incorrectly. Homemade or altered batteries pose a significant fire risk and can quickly ignite or explode.

For your safety:
πŸ”‹ Only use batteries that are manufactured and approved for the product you purchased
πŸ”‹ Avoid modified, homemade, or off-brand batteries that are not designed for your device
πŸ”‹ Never recycle or dispose of damaged, swollen, overheating, or smoking batteries in regular trash
πŸ”‹ If a battery becomes hot, smokes, or shows signs of damage, move away and call 911 if needed
⚠️ Smoke from lithium-ion batteries can be toxic and hazardous to inhale. Avoid breathing the fumes and leave the area immediately if a battery is smoking.

A small battery issue can become a serious fire in seconds. Stay safe and use only manufacturer-approved products.

Today, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women of our military who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness secured the freedoms we enjoy each day. Memorial Day is not only a time for reflection, but a solemn reminder that freedom is never free. We are forever grateful to those who gave their lives and to the families who carry their legacy forward.

May we never forget their sacrifice. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Training Tuesday, May 12th - training focused on vehicle stabilization utilizing Paratech struts and Rescue 42 stabilization equipment. Members practiced techniques for securing vehicles involved in motor vehicle accidents to prevent unwanted movement during patient extrication and firefighter operations. Stabilization is a critical component of rescue operations, as unstable vehicles can shift unexpectedly, creating dangerous conditions for both victims and responders.
Crews also worked on deploying airbags to safely lift vehicles while simultaneously using cribbing to stabilize and support the load. Members gained hands-on experience building stable platforms and operating lifting equipment.
