We love to celebrate the wonderful Friends of the Salem - South Lyon District Library, a volunteer group who dedicate their time to being advocates in South Lyon.
Our Friends maintain the beautiful gardens, our Book Room, organize fundraisers, attend events and advocate for the Library in countless valuable ways. Joining the Friends is both a wonderful and effective way to meet and work alongside great individuals and support your Library!
Established in 1962, Together they make a difference. Friends of the Salem-South Lyon District Library is a non stock, not for profit 501 (c) (3) corporation (incorporated in 1962) whose purpose is to support and advocate the Salem-South Lyon District Library. The Friends Board consists of seven (7) membership elected members, with officers including President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer.

The footprints in the snow say it all!! ❄️👣

But if that’s not proof enough, the national Little Free Library organization recently released a study that revealed something we’ve known well since 2016 - having an LFL in your community encourages kids to read. A LOT:

“Greater Access to Books – 92% of children reported having more access to books because of Little Free Library book-sharing boxes.

Increased Reading Time – Children who visit a Little Free Library read an average of 1.1 additional days per week. Nearly half (49%) reported reading more frequently since they began using a Little Free Library.

Home Library Growth – 88% of children said they now keep more books at home, helping them build personal libraries.”

This study was based in Baltimore, but without a doubt it’s true right here, too. Rain or shine, snow or clouds, we’ve always got books waiting for you, SL!

The only requirements for the Friends' scholarship are that the student is a graduating senior who lives in the SLCS district or has an SSLDL library card. Scholarship funds may be applied toward any 2-year or 4-year college, university, trade or technical school, or certificate program. The deadline is January 31, 2025.
