Great news, one of the emergency retention basins has been drained and cleaned over the past week! This is thanks to Operations and Heavy Maintenance Depts working together to get the ERBs cleaned.

Crews have started to draw down the second basin, which will take ~2-3 weeks to complete, depending upon plant performance and capacity.

While drawing down the basins, the District is also continuing to treat incoming wastewater from the community. As leaves decrease substantially, odors may be more noticeable.

Our team is remaining focused on restoring the plant to full treatment capacity and completing the work safely and efficiently.

We’re proud to give back at the 9th Annual Tahoe Brewfest! Last weekend, District staff, friends, and family volunteered as the event’s Strike Team, helping vendors tear down their booths and clean up Ski Run Boulevard afterward. The event featured great brews, live music, local food, and good vibes, while raising funds for the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe. We’re grateful for the opportunity to support an organization dedicated to empowering local young people and helping them reach their full potential. Thank you to everyone who helped make this community event a success!

Over the past several weeks, the biological treatment process at STPUD's wastewater treatment plant has experienced operational challenges. Our Operations Department has worked hard over that time to recover the microorganisms. And the good news is... they are ready to start bringing back the water stored in the basins at the corner of Black Bart Ave and Pioneer Trail!

Approximately 12 million gallons are currently stored in the Emergency Rentition Basins. The drawdown of the basins is anticipated to occur at roughly 1 million gallons per day, taking 2-4 weeks (dependant on flow and plant health). This will occur while we are also treating incoming wastewater from our community.

As water levels in the basins decrease, settled solids may become exposed. This may temporarily increase odors, particularly during cleaning. We recognize these odors are unpleasant. Our team is working diligently to restore full treatment capacity and complete this work as safely and efficiently as possible.
