Strong winds and cold water can create dangerous conditions on the lake within minutes. Before heading out, take a moment to watch this boating message from our Marine 1 Unit and make safety a priority.

Your safety and those responding in an emergency depend on it.

Stay safe this summer season!

Today, May 31, 2026 the South Lake Tahoe Police Department had the honor of providing an es**rt and traffic control for the 77th annual Highway 50 Wagon Train. Started in 1949 to mark the 100th anniversary of the “Gold Rush” on Highway 50, the Wagon Train has traveled from Lake Tahoe to Placerville every year since. Recognized by the State of California in 1980 and the State of Nevada in 1982 the Wagon Train is the only Bi-State Moving Historical Event in the United States. SLTPD es**rts the Wagon Train from the area of Round Hill, NV into California and through the city limits. From there the California Highway Patrol takes over as the Wagon train makes its way over Echo Summit to Placerville, CA.

On May 22, SLTPD Marine 1 responded to what was reported as a 20' log in the Tahoe Keys Homeowners Channel creating a hazard to navigation. With the help of and Towboat US Lake Tahoe, they were able to safely remove what turned out to be a 50' partially submerged log.

Especially in the early season, boaters need to keep a sharp eye out for floating and partially submerged debris and report any hazards to navigation to USCG Station Lake Tahoe (209) 815-7052. Stay safe out there!

Congratulations to Dispatch Supervisor Jill Gard on graduating the California POST Supervisory Leadership Institute (SLI) course. SLI is an intense, eight month program focusing on leadership, ethical decision making, and personal growth. Each class includes approximately 20 other supervisors, including police sergeants and dispatch supervisors, from agencies throughout California.

The program tasks its students with reading books on leadership, ethics, and overcoming adversity. They also give a final presentation on an adaptive leadership project they develop during the course.

Way to go, Jill!

Honoring our local 9-1-1 heroes. 👏

On Wednesday, May 13, at the State Capitol in Sacramento, Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil recognized outstanding public safety dispatchers during the 9-1-1 Heroes event, presenting Senate Certificates of Recognition to those whose calm, courage, and decisive communication saved lives during critical incidents.

Among those honored were our very own, Fire Dispatcher Melissa Dube and Police Dispatcher Nicole Harrington, who were nominated for their extraordinary response during the historic June 21, 2025, storm on Lake Tahoe’s south shore. As eight-foot swells battered the shoreline and 9-1-1 calls surged, Melissa and Nicole worked side-by-side under intense pressure, helping protect the community during one of the region’s most challenging emergencies.

We are proud to celebrate Melissa and Nicole for receiving the 9-1-1 Hero Award and grateful for their unwavering dedication to public safety.

Please join us in congratulating these remarkable dispatch professionals. 💙
