Sir Owen, the Little Free Library

Sir Owen, the Little Free Library Hello! I am Sir Owen, the Little Free Library, Charter No. 26610. Take a book, leave a book. Smile, create memories, and share the love of reading.

Welcome to my page: Sir Owen, the Little Free Library! Stop by and visit me often-- grab a new book to read; drop off a book that you'd like to share with the neighborhood; get a free bookmark; sign my log book; and pick up some bee-friendly wildflower seeds. Like my page, follow me on Instagram (sirowenlfl), and check in often to see new books added; updates and activities; and maybe get

advance notice for when my stewards leave a free jar of honey from the Royal beehives for the next lucky visitor! I began life as a British K6 telephone box, born at a foundry in Scotland in the mid- to late 1930s. I served dutifully and faithfully in England throughout World War II, keeping calm, and carrying on. I saw post-war reconstruction, the beginning of the Cold War, and the literary and cinematic rise of a certain secret agent on Her Majesty's Secret Service. Being hugely keen on the large British pennies of my youth, with the decimalization of the currency I decided to try my luck across the pond, emigrating to the United States in the early 1970s. I survived disco, the awesomeness that was the 1980s, the tech bubble of the 1990s, and eventually, as phones became smaller and more portable while I remained large, resolute, and stationary, even my own obsolescence. I was decommissioned as a functioning phone box a few years after the turn of the new century, and through a series of adventures eventually wound up as a show piece for other 'antiques' like me. But while I appreciated those who gazed at me in curiosity and wonder, still I longed for something more-- to once again connect with people of all ages and serve as a gathering place of community. Thus when the opportunity arose, I jumped at the chance (which is saying something, considering I'm 80 years old and weigh 750kg, not counting my concrete floor) to move to Utah and become a Little Free Library in South Jordan. After a couple of repairs and a fresh coat of paint, I began this new chapter of life on August 3rd, 2015. It's not hard to imagine all the history that I've seen over the past 80 years, and the stories that I could tell. This next adventure might not be as exciting as London during the Blitz, but I am nevertheless looking forward to creating many new stories and memories, sharing my love of books and reading with the community. Like a friendly grandparent who's always ready with a storybook and a warm cookie, I hope to bring you a smile, a chance to slow down and connect, and a nostalgic reminder of life as it once was. Full name: Sir Owen St. George, after Sir Owen Morshead, the Royal Librarian when I was born and throughout my early life, principally during the reigns of King George V and King George VI.

"The more outrΓ© and grotesque an incident is the more carefully it deserves to be examined, and the very point which appears to complicate a case is, when duly considered and scientifically handled, the one which is most likely to elucidate it." - Sherlock Holmes πŸ‘πŸ”

"Then indeed, my heart sank within me: beside the bed, as if he had stepped out of the mist - or rather as if the mist had turned into his figure, for it had entirely disappeared - stood a tall, thin man, all in black. I knew him at once from the description of the others. The waxen face; the high aquiline nose, on which the light fell in a thin white line; the parted red lips, with the sharp white teeth showing between; and the red eyes that I had seemed to see in the sunset on the windows of St. Mary's Church at Whitby..."

"But as I listened, I heard as if from down below in the valley the howling of many wolves. The Count’s eyes gleamed, and he said:
'Listen to them, the children of the night. What music they make!' Seeing, I suppose, some expression in my face strange to him, he added, 'Ah, sir, you dwellers in the city cannot enter into the feelings of the hunter.' ”

"It was about eleven o'clock in the morning, mid October, with the sun not shining and a look of hard wet rain in the clearness of the foothills. I was wearing my powder-blue suit, with dark blue shirt, tie and display handkerchief, black brogues, black wool socks with dark little clocks on them. I was neat, clean, shaved and sober, and I didn't care who knew it. I was everything the well-dressed private detective ought to be. I was calling on four million dollars."
