The South Hempstead Fire Department was founded in 1905. We cover .7 square miles which includes 3 zip codes... South Hempstead proper, Baldwin Oaks and Birchwood (Rockville Centre) 1200 homes.. There are two elementary schools, a Gas/Service Station, Service Station, Golf Country Club, Church, 1 row of stores and 1 shopping center. We cover the Southern State Parkway from Exit 19, Peninsula Blvd

to Coes Neck Rd overpass. (midway between Ex 20-21)

On Sunday, April 26th, 2026, the South Hempstead Fire Department operated on the scene of a confirmed car fire on the ramp from the eastbound Southern State Parkway to northbound Peninsula Boulevard. Firefighters put one hand line into operation off of Engine 742 and had the fire quickly extinguished. All occupants made it out of the vehicle safely and there were no reported injuries. On Sunday, March 12th, Chief 7400, Chief 7401, and Engine 741 responded mutual aid to a working house fire in Hempstead. Upon arrival, the crew assisted with placing the first two handlines into operation and later assisted with overhaul operations. Engine 741 was on scene within 3 minutes of notification and was the first mutual aid engine to arrive.Photos

Last night, SHFD responded to an overturned vehicle with entrapment in the Baldwin Oaks section of the district.

Chiefs 7400 and 7401 arrived first on scene and confirmed the entrapment. Units 742 and 743 quickly followed.

Members of Unit 742 worked alongside the Nassau County Police Department to safely extricate the victim, demonstrating outstanding teamwork and professionalism under pressure.

On Monday, Jan 5, 2026 @ approx 10pm the SHFD responded to a house fire in the Baldwin Oaks section. Crews located a small basement fire and quickly brought it under control. Thanks to the fast response of 741 and our mutual aid partners from Baldwin FD and Hempstead FD, the fire was knocked down quickly with minimal damage.
