Now that summer is approaching and temperatures are rising, this is an important reminder that hot car deaths are the leading cause of non-crash, vehicle-related deaths for children 14 and younger. Every death is preventable.

Before you walk away, take a moment to check the back seat, make sure everyone is out, and lock your vehicle.

Celebrating a graduation this summer? Before hosting, it is important to understand your responsibilities under Massachusetts social host law.

Graduation parties should be memorable for the right reasons. If alcohol is served, hosts can face serious legal and financial consequences when guests are injured, injure others, or drive drunk and cause harm. The risks can be even greater when underage drinking is involved.

Under Massachusetts law, a social host is anyone (adult or minor) who is in control of the premises and who furnishes alcohol or allows it to be consumed on the premises. This law also does not differentiate for age. Should you leave for the weekend and your child who is under 21 decides to have a party at your house with alcohol, regardless of whether they purchased the alcohol or not, if they are allowing underage drinking to take place in the house they have control over, they can be charged criminally with furnishing alcohol to minors even though they themselves are under 21.

Under Massachusetts’ Law, a person under 21 years of age who, in good faith, seeks medical assistance for someone experiencing alcohol-related incapacitation shall not be charged or prosecuted.

As you spent time with family and friends this holiday weekend, we hope you took a moment to reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day and pay tribute to those who gave their lives to protect our freedoms.

Traffic Safety in South Hadley: 5-Year Crash Statistics (2021–2025)

The South Hadley Police Department remains committed to improving roadway safety through enforcement, education, and community awareness.

Over the past five years, South Hadley has experienced:
• A continued number of motor vehicle crashes impacting our community each year
• Crashes involving young drivers, older drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists
• Incidents connected to distracted driving behaviors, including electronic device use behind the wheel.

South Hadley has adopted the 25 MPH statutory speed limit under Massachusetts General Law Chapter 90, Section 17C. Lower vehicle speeds significantly reduce the likelihood of serious injury or death in a crash.

Remember:
✔️ Slow down
✔️ Put the phone away
✔️ Drive sober
✔️ Watch for pedestrians and cyclists
✔️ Always wear your seatbelt

Every safe decision behind the wheel helps protect our community.

Thinking of buying your child an electric bicycle or dirt bike? Please make sure you know the law and differences between the types of electric bikes. Some classes of these bikes can reach dangerous speeds for children!

If there are NO pedals, or it can travel faster than 20 MPH it’s NOT an e-bike, it’s a moped or motorcycle, requiring:
𝐀 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫’𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞 (𝟏𝟔+).
𝐕𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.
𝐀 𝐃𝐎𝐓-𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐦𝐞𝐭 (𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬).

Laws for Electric Dirt Bikes:
Electric dirt bikes are recreational motor vehicle, not e-bikes, meant for off-road use (on private land with permission of the landowner), not streets.
𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟖: Must complete a safety course (contact Boat & RV Safety Bureau).
𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟔½: Can’t cross public roads unless supervised by an adult (18+) and the crossing is approved.
𝐀𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝟏𝟒-𝟏𝟔: Can’t ride dirt bikes (>90cc or electric equivalent) and need adult supervision for smaller ones.
𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Required for use on public or private land (except for farming or construction).
𝐍𝐨 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐮𝐬𝐞: Dirt bikes are banned on public roads or highways except at approved crossings.

E-bikes are electric bicycles with motors to help you go faster. Massachusetts recognizes two types:
𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝟏: Motor works only when pedaling, max 20 mph.
𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝟐: Has a throttle to engage the motor, max 20 mph.
Both MUST have working pedals!
𝐑𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐄-𝐁𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐬:
Follow all regular bicycle rules & laws; but never ride on sidewalks or conservation trails.

Helmets are required for children under 16. No driver’s license or registration are needed.
