The South Glens Falls Police Department extends its sincere appreciation to District Attorney Brett Eby and his staff for their outstanding work on this case. We remain committed to protecting the members of our community. Violence has no place here, and those who commit violent acts will be held accountable.

District Attorney Brett Eby Announces Indictment in Attempted Murder Case

The Saratoga County District Attorney’s Office announces that a Saratoga County Grand Jury has returned an indictment against Aaron G. Gookin. The defendant is charged with Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, a Class “B” Violent Felony (Penal Law §§ 110.00/125.25[1]), Attempted Assault in the First Degree(Penal Law 110.00/120.10[1], Strangulation in the Second Degree(Penal Law 121.12), two counts of Assault in the Second Degree(120.05[2]) and other misdemeanor offenses.

The indictment alleges that on February 18, 2026, in the Town of Moreau, the defendant attempted to intentionally cause the death of his 77-year-old mother. It is alleged that the defendant strangled the victim and struck her in the head with a piece of wood, causing serious physical injuries. The investigation concluded that the attack occurred after the victim attempted to intervene and protect the defendant from an internet financial scam.
The case is being prosecuted by Special Victims Unit Bureau Chief Rachael Phelan and Assistant District Attorney Emily Williams.

The District Attorney’s Office extends its sincere gratitude to the South Glens Falls Police Department, and in particular Patrolman Michael Gailor, for their diligent and professional work in investigating this matter.

District Attorney Brett Eby stated:
“This was a deeply disturbing and violent attack against a vulnerable member of our community.” Our office is committed to supporting the victim and ensuring she is treated with dignity and respect throughout this process. We will continue to work diligently to prepare the strongest possible case and to pursue justice on her behalf.

Great work Officer Cordiner!

Gratitude. Protection. Accountability.

I want to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude to a dedicated law enforcement officer from South Glens Falls, along with South Glens Falls Police and Animal Control, for stepping in and helping ensure Navi’s safety.

This past week has been incredibly difficult. My team and I committed to providing the medical care necessary to save this dog, and in doing so, we were met with hostility, threats, and escalating behavior that no veterinary professional, rescue, or community member should ever have to endure.

As more information came to light, it became clear there is a concerning pattern of harmful behavior toward animals. That is something I will never ignore or accept.

With the support of Happy Husky Rescue and Alfie’s Rescue, and the swift involvement of law enforcement, we were able to protect Navi and move her into a safer path forward. Because of that, I can now continue to advocate for her, heal her, and give her the chance she deserves.

To everyone who stood behind us—thank you. Your support matters more than you know.

But let me be clear:
No veterinarian, no rescue, and no staff should be threatened, intimidated, or made to feel unsafe for doing the right thing.

This situation highlights a larger issue—
We need a stronger, structured animal welfare system integrated with law enforcement so that private citizens and veterinary teams are not forced to bear the burden of dangerous and repeated offenders.

What happened this week was unacceptable.
To my staff—none of you deserved to be spoken to or treated that way.

We will always stand for the animals.
And we will not back down.

— Dr. Haring
